Is the Secret Service Payscale that Bad?

AS many of you might have heard by now, a few members of the security entourage of President Obama, were caught because of their inability to understand the basic protocols involved in dealing with escorts. However a few aspects of this case are especially curious and shed light on another issue which in time will become a far bigger liability. I will draw your attention to certain parts of an article about this story in the NYT.

The disagreement over her price — he offered $30 for services she thought they had agreed were worth more than 25 times that — set off a tense early morning quarrel in the hallway of the luxury hotel involving the woman, another prostitute, Colombian police officers arguing on the women’s behalf and American federal agents who tried but failed to keep the matter from escalating.

Ya.. I know what this is about. You see, he thought that the rates per hour of service were the same as those for overnight stay. They are not! The overnight stay rates are usually the equivalent of 6-8 hours of their hourly rate. Remember that! Never hire an escort for anything over 2 hours because after 2-4 nice nuts, there is not much left to do or even talk about. Moving on..

There was a language gap between the woman, 24, who declined to give her full name, and the American man who sat beside her at the bar and eventually invited her to his room. She agreed, stopped on the way to buy condoms but told him he would have to give her a gift. He asked how much. Not knowing he worked for Mr. Obama but figuring he was a well-heeled foreigner, she said, she told him $800.

So she told him her rates rather clearly, and any person who has dabbled in this area should know that it is best to walk away if the rates are not to your liking. Bargaining for sex is what pathetic men, such as husbands and boyfriends, do. It seems that in the morning he forgot that he had promised her 800$ and tried to get rid of her with 30$. Things obviously went south after that and the escort left the room in a huff..

She said she was crying and went across the hall, where another escort had spent the night with an American man from the same group. Both women began trying to get the money. They knocked on the door but got no response. She threatened to call the police, but the man’s friend, who appeared on the scene, begged her not to, saying they did not want trouble. Finally, she said, she left to go home but came across a police officer stationed in the hallway, who called in an English-speaking colleague. He accompanied her back to the room and the dispute escalated. Two other Americans from the club emerged from their rooms and stood guard in front of their friend’s locked door. The two Colombian officers tried to argue the woman’s case.

Are these ‘secret service’ people nuts? It is stupid to draw extra attention to yourself in a foreign country. Why did they not just pay the whore off?

A hotel security officer arrived. Eventually, she lowered her demand to $250, which she said was the amount she has to pay the man who helps find her customers. Eager to resolve the matter fast, the American men eventually gave her a combination of dollars and pesos worth about $225, and she left.

and this is what I find most disturbing. You would think that people in such sensitive jobs would be paid enough to have some spare change to pay for a few hookers and other unspecified expenses. I mean.. between three or more agents they had barely 250$. Could they not find an ATM or work some arrangement with the hotels management? Or did they really not have 800$ between, at least three of, them even though they were on an international trip?

In my opinion, the events can be best explained by the hypothesis that the ‘secret service agents, did not actually have that much spare cash on their hands. While I am not aware of the payscale for their jobs, it appears that the current one is a bit too low.

While the idea that people in that particular occupation might seem odd to many, it makes a lot of sense to me. Consider the payscale for people in the armed forces relative to the cost of the equipment they use. Even commercial pilots, especially those working for smaller commuter airlines, make a pittance compared to the cost of the equipment they are using. One of the more bizarre aspects of the ongoing middle-class dream collapse has been the tendency of management to cut or curtail wages of employees involved in jobs which involve real and skilled work. This has gone on at the same time those organizations have hired an increasing number people for much better paid but useless or counterproductive job functions.

What do you think? Comments?

Why are you always so f… right?!

All backwards. Powerful people who want to stay alive generally try to keep their bodyguards happy.

If I were a powerful guy with my own goons I’d not only pay them well and give great benefits, I’d personally buy them all the escorts.they wanted.
I’d have a private stable of chicks that I’d carefully screen and keep under surveillance in their ‘private’ lives.

Sexually frustrated confidantes make easy targets for spies.

The rulemakers couldn’t have done a better job of creating a security breach if they’d tried.

And think about it: experts in assassination, explosives, and mayhem paid peanuts on the job and then to add insult to injury, get fired for just trying to get laid……

That is precisely my point! The conditions and incentives in post-1980 USA are self-destabilizing.

A great many portions of our society seem to still think its 1958 or 1968 and that they can still get loyalty and probity for little or no cost because of patriotism or fear of the Reds

.Thats not the case and now everything must be paid for. Loyalty ? 50K extra.. Probity — another 25

I just wish the elite would get that in their head, nothing is free for them anymore even citizens but hey they wanted this– Serves the idiots right for monetizing everything.

Another quick comments — given the cost of living and the job stress, the Secret Service is not well paid. The GS scale is just barely middle class at the high end. Lower end agents get food service wages.

The government counts on loyalty (which they just learned they no longer have) and insanely intrusive background checks to weed out troublemakers so that say extremists don’t get to guard the President

The later works to a degree but because of the police state, that too is becoming unweildy (everybody know knows someone who is can cost you a job) and its becoming harder to fill billets.

As you said AD, its self destabilizing

    hahahaha,

crappy people defending a crappy prez….

so, I guess if it paid well, you being the generous creepster you are would do the job well, pay the girl well and everyone is happy?

    —-
If I got hit on by a prostitute, I’d be like “hey baby, I’ll get more sweaty than a good mountainbike ride, you’ll have multiple orgasms, and you expect me to PAY? First of all, even if I had that much money, that’s more than I make in a WHOLE DAY. But, y’know, I don’t like working much, wanna be my sugar momma?”

    tehe,

I bet she’d cry to manboobz and kay hymowitz that men aren’t men anymore when they’d rather play video games than pay for sex…..

I could make fun of the secret service douches for not having a real job….

I could make fun of the prostitute for not having a real job….

I could look myself in the mirror and feel bad for having a crappy job….

nah, more fun making fun of diablo….

Wouldn’t suprise me if they picked up Colombian girls because they can’t afford to do the same thing in their free time at home. Obviously if they had an expense account someone in the group could have defused the situation discretely.

We could just select people for the job who are married, have a good sex life and self control. Oh wait, this is America, never mind.

Brilliant article. I love your take on this.

If only those guys were reading AD’s blog regularly, they would still be guarding Michelle and her kids :-).

Latest news: More of the secret service agents to leave. They are dropping like fies. I don’t remember anyone losing job due to 9/ll. May be AD can make a story about the priorities of American public policy.

What policy? They have none. It is all reactive make-believe.

Conservatives are obsessed with sex. They are worried someone somewhere may have an orgasm. The latest incident with the secret service agents is a nonevent. It is being called a scandal. A guy hires a legal prostitute, big deal. Guys who are ready to die for the leader of the country are not appreciated. The way they are asked to leave service is moral equivalent of honor killings by middle easterners. Your kid is not a virgin on the wedding night. Kill her. The real culprits of the society keep going scot-free.

It’s too bad they thought that cheating someone out of the money they were owed was wise.
I wonder what other things they got away in the past with, too. Since irresponsibility of the kind that causes scandals is not usually a one-off occurrence.

    • April 21, 2012 at 11:53 pm

Honor killing on men, that is.

“Your kid is not a virgin on the wedding night. Kill her.”
Well, if you consult the Bible, specifically Deuteronomy,
the killing only happens if the family of the wife cannot prove to the husband that she was a virgin before the marriage was consummated, and he has brought it to their attention that she isn’t a virgin.
Or are you saying only the Muslims (which also happens to be an Abrahamic faith) do that?

The media attention in this situation is why I will never have a job involving p*litics/media/”educ*tion”/etc.
The escort did not do anything wrong/”illegal” and yet the media invaded her privacy all because the other guys did not pay her the entire amount she should have received for the services it sounds like she did in fact rendered (even the extra cash she got was not the complete payment).
If pr*stitution was legal in the U.S. then this wouldn’t be as much of an issue. The s*xually stuck-up society (especially, religi*ons, legal, even also many “game” blogs surprisingly, most “men’s rights” sites, and media) tries to continue to repress natural s*xuality for their own control/power over other people.

      April 26, 2012 at 12:33 pm

Invaded her privacy? Since she is working legally, the publicity is probably good for her. But it sounds like she was shaking the guy down if she didn’t get the payment upfront. $800 in Columbia has got to be top-of-the line, there’s no way she mistook a young agent for a wealthy businessman.

Ridiculous part is that the agents’ careers are destroyed though they didn’t break any law. The rest of the Service should resign. They throw their bodies in front of the bullet no matter what the President’s politics; that he fires them to score points with feminists and religious nuts is a betrayal.

        April 29, 2012 at 6:20 pm

He built his election campaign on the feminist vote: and they thought they were exempt?
Besides, what stopped them from going in mufti and completely off duty … in a location they weren’t assigned to (like any proper monger)?
Yes, hindsight is always 20/20 … but they seem to have forgotten the rule of “don’t shit where you eat”, along with the idea that just because they protect the President, doesn’t mean he’ll protect them.

Them airline pilots don’t make more than kids working for McDonalds. That and they’re up to their eyeballs in debt due to schooling. Fly the friendly skies.
