Flat fines for traffic violation are an example of gross tax inequality: the >$500 fines could easily wipe a poorer person out, but are trivial to a richer person.
Yep, especially in a state where cars are a necessity, not a privilege or luxury.

man. that shit is steep. i didn’t pay a red light ticket one time for a month or so b/c the 50 bucks was just not available. 200 and i’d be in debtors prison.

Did I mention that California is bankrupt and is trying very hard to raise its “revenues”.

Yeah, high rates, and what’s with the $278 type figures, as if they can figure it down to the dollar. I suppose it lends more authority.

Great catch, rightsaidfred… I wonder whether it’s just a coincidence that two of the fines are a perfect power of 2 (256=2^8)? Maybe there’s something very profound there, or maybe California legislators innately use base 2 😛

California is a fabulous state to visit. Every time I’m there I’m amazed at all the signs notifying citizens of this or that law and fine applicable. They definitely attempt to regulate as much behavior as possible.

Yes, it is. Though I am not sure if a nanny state is any worser than certain southern states that jail a much larger % of their population than china. I think they are both dystopic.
