Letting The Material Make My Point: Oct 23, 2010
You may remember this controversy.
There’s an uproar stirring over a group of 7-year-olds who danced provocatively to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” at the World of Dance competition last month. The video — which is now burning up the web — shows a troupe of young girls in midriff-baring tops, short skirts, and black stockings gyrating to the Grammy-winning tune at the competition in Pomona, California on April 10.
But have you looked at some of the other participants in that competition?
While the propriety of what they are doing is debatable, they are amazing athletes.
Ariana McClure- Jazz solo age 8 (see her from 1:56 to 1:58- amazing!).
and
Kylie Yamane, Alexis McClure, Cassidy Wolf- Jazz trio age 11.

This is child pornography.

It is on YouTube, but it certainly raises questions about the schizophrenic nature of american “morality”.
I’m a conservative, or a CONservative, as you would put it. I dislike government intervention and I especially dislike things like Child Protective Services, which I view as an intrusion into the family’s rightful role that does more harm than it helps.
But watching those videos makes me want to put every one of those kids in foster homes.

What if they were ‘exploited’ boys?
You mean 7-year old boys running around in chippendales outfits to… well, I’m not sure what an equivilent song would be, but I’m sure there’s one out there.
Yup, exact same reaction.
6mos ago, kinda old news but still a great topic.
My knee-jerk reaction is to categorize it as ‘wrong’, but I think that’s just societal programming. The age of consent in our country used to be 10 in the 1800’s. As our average age of marriage increased, our consent laws increased. So law is following culture which then follows law, to the point where it takes research and introspection to find an unbiased perspective.
The vast majority of comments on the youtube clip (dancers or parents of dancers themselves) are commending the girls for their talent and shaming anyone who thinks it’s not age appropriate. They say, “It’s just D-A-N-C-E!” Combine the fact that All dance is based in sexuality and the outfits and moves are designed to highlight the sexuality, I can conclude that the commenters are lying to themselves. It’s like the emperor’s new clothes, they have too much invested to see it for what it is.
But is it wrong?
Is it wrong to prepare a young girl for the reality of a life of being a sexual object and to identify her value with her body? Is it wrong for a female human, a sexual being, a few years shy of puberty (therefore not of baby-making age), to signal her fertility through public dance? Is it wrong to advance the propaganda of sexual guilt by parading a 7yr old’s sexually charged dance on the nightly news?
Our society has become even more sexually repressed and backward than in it’s earliest years. Sex is normal and healthy, and should not be such an awkward topic.
Those girls are already moving on to bigger and better “things” (both literally and figuratively).
Remember that for Jodie Foster, acting as a 12-year old prostitute was her big break!
