How Online Presence Alters Your Mind: 1

November 24, 2010 7 comments

Here is a question for you guys-

How many of the people you communicate with are entities with whom you have no, or little, real life interaction?

Throughout most of human history the whole concept of having daily communication with people whom you had never met, or seldom talked to, was a weird fantasy. Today, it is not only a reality but so commonplace that most of us cannot imagine a world without it.

So, how does this affect your mind. Apart from the obvious exposure to ideas beyond your immediate circle, it creates a peculiar dynamic unlike anything we have known. For almost all of human history, your immediate circle of acquaintances had a big impact on your ideas- especially regarding what was acceptable and what was not.

Today, immediate personal acquaintances are largely useless and you can find like-minded people online.

It does not take a genius to figure that once the negative reinforcement loop is replaced by a positive amplifier circuit, something is going to change. Ideas, attitudes and trends that were previously unpopular or suppressed are now amplified and disseminated with a speed that was inconceivable (for most people) even 10 years ago.

The renaissance was not possible without the printing press. So where will blogs, BBs, specialty websites and facebook, twitter type connectivity lead? The status quo cannot hold, though what will replace it is unclear.

CONservatives and Entitlement

It is hard to find a CONservative who does not constantly bemoan, how “others” are not entitled to things such as job security, education, decent medical care etc.

Unlike CONservatives, I am generous. Let me show you an example of what CONservatives and their progeny are entitled to.
