Why WikiLeaks Is Likely Legit

There are many who believe in conspiracy theories about wikileaks being a creation of some intelligence agency. I believe that is very unlikely.

The reasons are-

1] Intelligence agencies are full of social climbers, bureaucrats, cliques, clubs making them hotbeds of office politics and intrigue. Such an environment typically creates two kinds of schemes- conventional and hare brained. Well thought out, but unconventional, schemes are not the hallmarks of intelligence agencies.

Remember that the average employee of an intelligence agency is not a brilliant or patriotic zealot. He (or she) is a smarter than average government employee who wants a promotion, raise, plum assignment and bigger office.

2] The recruitment practices of intelligence agencies select for conventional cleverness and obedience to authority. They want mandarins, not unpredictable geniuses. They want people who think in a conventional manner and have a ‘standard’ worldview.

The ability of intelligence agencies to respond to unconventional threats has historically been piss poor. Their strengths lie in fighting similar sized organizations with similar shortcomings.

3] Since most governments have more than one intelligence agency, there are numerous turf wars. Most of these turf wars adversely affect their ability to coordinate everything from databases to procedures and strategy.

Do you really think that the people in various US intelligence agencies see each other as comrades?

4] Decisions are often made by senior, and therefore older, guys. If you believe that some of those guys are in touch with today’s world, I have a bridge to sell you. Remember that many of these guys grew up in a world very unlike the one that exists- a time where the technology and options were rather different from today.

Even a tech savvy and competent younger guy would have a hard time getting past the old fogies who do not want to lose power to some upstart. Do you really think that these agencies are any different from a large soulless corporation?

5] Many departments and groups in intelligence agencies exist for the sole purpose of making some buddy of a division head rich through sweet heart deals. The procurement policies of intelligence agencies are based on sweet-heart deals and outdated rules and regulations.

They are reactive and rigid instead of being heuristic and flexible.

6] Last, but not the least- People in such agencies are afraid of being attached to projects with a good probability of failure or unpredictable results. It looks super bad on your internal resume, especially given the types of people who work in these agencies.

If they have to screw up they will choose to do so in a conventional manner.

The level of ability, competence, patriotism and creativity most people ascribe to intelligence agencies exists only in movies, tv shows and novels.

What you say is true, but, you miss one important thing… these agencies don’t like to be embarassed.

SO, *if* Wikileaks was real, then they should be doing EVERYTHING they could to stop it.

Even the KGB or Mossad, at their peak, could not get away with a fraction of the stuff you think they did.

The fact that they (CIA, DIA, DOD, et. Al.) are NOT doing everything they can tells me one of two things:

    1) It’s their op, even if Assange is for real, he’s a tool – at best.

    2) It’s Obama’s op, and his office is holding the intel community in check.

Either one screws the American people. If it’s a real op, then think about who they’re smoking out right now… and what they will do to them very shortly. Everything from Assange to various web hosting companies to hundreds of small bloggers and websites will all go up in smoke Real Soon Now.

That is where you are wrong.. the internet is too well embedded in our daily existence to fuck around with. Even china cannot control the internet within its own borders.

OR, if it’s just Obama’s op and he’s holding us back… then George Soros and his minons are ratcheting up the coming social meltdown. If some info about a major US bank is released and causes a bank run… “good”! If enough people get pissed about the wars again… “good”! If Assange commits suicide with a couple of bullets to the back of the head then the Anarchists will have something else to foment their window breaking and firebombing… “good”!

You are thinking in paradigms that are no longer possible, assuming they once were.

We’re all being played… the game is called let’s get everyone to fight amongst themselves so that they won’t notice when we take power. (Haven’t you seen Star Wars! 🙂

That is why I said- movies, tv shows and books vastly exaggerate the abilities of such entities. The real stuff is far more plain, limited and mundane.

which agency do you think is closer to the optimum?

Come on… do you really think the US government is doing EVERYTHING it can to fix the Wikileaks problem? NO WAY. They are just sitting on their hands. They aren’t even remotely trying all of the options for getting him and for getting the website(s) taken down. Instead they’re showing GREAT restraint… keeping their powder dry, so to speak. And, please understand, I know quite a bit more than the average guy as to how the Internet works… I’m not saying they could succeed. I know they cannot succeed in the long run… I’m saying that they aren’t even TRYING.

Please… ask yourself WHY would this be?

    Some possible answers:

    A) There’s nothing important or new being leaked… but it makes a great distraction and we can smoke out those that help it to spread… heh.

    B) There’s important stuff being leaked and we’re happy about it! Bring down the evil capitalist system ASAP! Yea!

    C) We’re running around like chickens with our heads cut off and we just don’t know what to do about it… we’re SO INCOMPETANT. Yeah, right. Don’t you think at least ONE agency would be working all out to fix this. More than likely multiple agencies would be at LEAST TRYING to do something. YET, they’re pretty much doing NOTHING. Nada. Zip. This level of coordinated incompetance is so implausible that it most certainly MUST be deliberate.

But, either way, the regular guy is screwed… that much we agree on.

You yourself admit they could not succeed. Meanwhile, the more they overtly try to shut it down, the more egg they have on their faces. Obama’s nonreaction is about the best he could possibly do. What would you have him do? Bomb Sweden, assassinate the pirate party members? That’ll really make matters better for the US…

PS. That Star Wars reference was kinda just yanking your chain… but, a great deal of our popular culture’s references to “falling republics” comes from the history of the Roman Republic and it’s fall and rebirth as the Roman Empire. There ARE a great deal of parallels that shouldn’t be dismissed just because they also happen to make great theater.

True! True! True! the only reason intelligence agencies really exist is that people really believe that they are the bees knees or to use an older expression, thecat’s whiskers. Even otherwise smart people believe that intelligence agencies kick ass. Very few people understand how badly run these are. So day, some how some young tyro will come and throw them a challenge. And rather than face the challenge, they will choose to collapse and die because that is easier. God! it would be so much fun to throw a cat among these pigeons and watch them collapse on their own foundations like a well controlled demolition. Boom! Kaboom!

President Kennedy learned that the hard way with the Bay of Pigs invasion. Afterwards he refused to use the CIA for anything. They demonstrated incompetence at very basic levels – many of the operatives involved didn’t even speak Spanish (not that difficult a language for a native English speaker). Shows like “Chuck” that are filled with glamorous, butt-kicking spies are just fantasies.
