Ethical Dilemmas: Killing The Bad Doctor

January 3, 2011 12 comments

OK, Here is a real world dilemma.

As many of you know, a significant percentage of medical students are primarily motivated by money and ego. They often lack ability and competence beyond what is necessary for passing entrance exams and “volunteering”. However most of these individuals do end up becoming physicians once they enter into medical school.

In an ideal world, people who consistently made mistakes would be fired from their jobs or barred from practicing their profession. Physicians are one of the exceptions to this rule, and short of raping a brain-damaged 6 year old blond girl in front of multiple HD video cameras- they will end up killing many people from utter incompetence before being flagged as problematic, let alone prosecuted.

I have written about this before and the gist is that an average bad doctor is a far more prolific murderer than infamous serial killers. But we as a society treat serial killers, or anyone who kills/maims innocent people rather differently from a bad doctor. I am not going to talk about the ‘why’ of such behavior, but about the possibilities.

If a person kills the physician and his/her family in retaliation for a very obviously botched treatment leading to another innocent persons death- is it not justified? Remember that I not talking about simple mistakes, misunderstandings, rare disease etc.

However if somebody did this in our current system, it is he who would be prosecuted as a criminal. My second question is- what does that say about the society we live in?

About That “Global Warming” Thingy

You may have heard ‘scientists’ and ‘experts’ proclaim, almost daily, that humans cause global warming, and how CO2 levels below 350 ppm are necessary to “preserve human civilization”.

So how are things working out in the real world? you know.. the one outside of simplified and gerrymandered computer models.

Feed Back is Appreciated: New Site Design

January 3, 2011 3 comments

I recently acquired a new domain with a simple, catchy and apt name. The idea is to create a more SFW version of this website, however this one will keep on going in its current form.

The new website will have articles derived from my older posts on this website. But they will undergo more editing and polishing. Old comments shall be integrated into the articles. Obviously the rate of article publishing will be closer to one a day instead of the 2-4/ per day on this website.

So here are my questions..

1. I am leaning towards using wordpress, however other suggestions are welcome.

2. I am considering creating some sort of forum, but one that is much easier to navigate than your standard bulletin boards. Any suggestions?

3. The new site will be designed and optimized for internal search, unlike this one. Any suggestions on what you like- examples?

4. Readers using mobile devices , for obvious reasons, will be considered in any design scheme. Any suggestions on sites that work well for mobiles?

5. Any other suggestions? Two column vs three column vs four column? Layout? Templates? Themes?

I do not foresee any immediate need for donations, but I might monetize it later. However, the readability of the new site shall not be hindered by unsightly ads.

As you know, my motivations are not monetary.
