A Few Peculiar Facts About Jared Loughner

January 9, 2011 5 comments

Unless you have been living in a part of the world without telecommunication for the last two days, you should have heard about Jared Loughner and his shootout that critically injured Gabrielle Giffords, killed a few others and injured many more.

So here are a few peculiar facts about Loughner.

Did Giffords subscribe to assassin’s YouTube?

In a bizarre turn of events, the YouTube website of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords suggests she subscribed to the YouTube channel of her suspected attempted assassin, Jarred Loughner, at some point before the shooting incident. Given YouTube rules, for Giffords to subscribe to Loughner’s YouTube channel would have required an affirmative action taken by Giffords or by someone with access to her YouTube username and password to establish the subscription link. Loughner’s YouTube subscription channel under the username “Classitup10” was created on Oct. 25, 2010, and his last two videos were posted to the channel on Dec. 15, 2010, approximately three weeks before the shooting.

While it is now known that Loughner worked for Gifford’s election campaign in 2007, that Gifford subscribed to Loughner’s website since Oct. 25, 2010, suggests the two may have been in contact more recently. Oddly, the only other YouTube channel Giffords subscribed to was that of former Rep. Ike Skelton, D-Mo., who lost his seat in November to Republican challenger Vicky Hartzler. A page from Gifford’s YouTube website demonstrates she had subscribed to only two YouTube users: Loughner (username: Classitup10) and Rep. Ike Skelton

and this one..

Shooting suspect’s nihilism rose with isolation

TUCSON, Ariz. – At an event roughly three years ago, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords took a question from Jared Loughner, the man accused of trying to assassinate her and killing six other people. According to two of his high school friends the question was essentially this: “What is government if words have no meaning?” Loughner was angry about her response — she read the question and didn’t have much to say.

…Mistrust of government was Loughner’s defining conviction, the friends said. He believed the U.S. government was behind 9/11, and worried that governments were maneuvering to create a unified monetary system (“a New World Order currency” one friend said) so that social elites and bureaucrats could control the rest of the world…

..Over time, Loughner became increasingly introspective — what one of the friends described as a “nihilistic rut.” An ardent atheist, he began to characterize people as sheep whose free will was being sapped by the government and the monotony of modern life. “He didn’t want people to wake up and do the same thing every day. He wanted more chaos, he wanted less regularity,” one friend said. The friends said Loughner told anyone who would listen that the world we see does not exist, that words have no meaning — and that the only way to derive meaning was during sleep. Loughner began obsessing about a practice called lucid dreaming, in which people try to actively control their sleeping world. Several people who knew Loughner at community college said he did not engage in political discussions, but was socially awkward…

In my opinion, there is much more to this case then some guy going nuts.

Reaping What You Sow: 1

January 9, 2011 11 comments

The intertubes are full of white people saying stuff like:

Blacks are poor tippers.. Black are aggressive, unhelpful and criminal etc..

Here is my counter-question:

Why are you so surprised? You reap what you sow!

Why would you expect someone belonging to a group which, in living memory, was openly treated as subhuman to treat you any better? It is only in the last 30 years that we have seen any real improvement in the relative status of blacks in the US.

Even today, being black is associated with a variety of social handicaps from fewer second chances, disproportionately worse treatment by the “justice” system (arrests versus convictions), subtle discrimination AND lack of equal sympathy from other groups.

That is not to neglect the effect of internal social problems such as high rates of single motherhood in the black community. However even that phenomena is a response to external problems such as high rates of incarceration for black guys and the systemic discrimination against them in the job market.

Now you might still say.. it is all about ‘HBD’ and ‘IQ’…

In that case- believe what you want to, but then don’t complain that people who you see as subhumans are not greeting you as ‘friends’ and ‘liberators’.

Lies About the Long Term Viability of Democracy: 1

January 9, 2011 3 comments

Many of you might have heard this quote..

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.

The origins of this quote are somewhat sketchy and wikipedia has this to say about it’ origin.

The earliest known appearance of this quote was December 9, 1951, in what appears to be an op-ed piece in The Daily Oklahoman under the byline Elmer T. Peterson. The quote has not been found in Tytler’s work. It has also been attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville.

So here is my question-

Given that democracies with universal suffrage are a post-ww2 phenomena, is there even one example of a major democracy failing because of the masses ‘voting itself largess’?

If there is not even one good example of this phenomena in the post-universal suffrage era, is it not just a personal opinion? If anything, elites and oligarchs in democracies are the cause of their failure.

How has trickle-down economics worked out? What about supply-side vodoo? How many jobs have reducing taxes on corporations created or even saved? Who benefits from them, anyway? Who is enriched by ‘free market capitalism’? What value is created by the FIRE Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate sector? What value do MBAs, Lawyers and Management Types create.. other than for themselves through ‘legalized’ stealing?
