Why Basic and Academic Research is Collapsing: 1

February 5, 2011 6 comments

Ever wonder why basic and academic research is collapsing? In case you are unaware, the type of fundamental research which made the ascendancy of the west possible has been dying since the late 1970s.

While breakthrough research is dying, the institutions that are supposed to perform it are apparently flourishing in a manner reminiscent of ponzi schemes. So why are these institutions not performing their job? and why are they becoming ever larger if they cannot deliver what they repeatedly promise to?

It comes down to one meta-reason.

They are being run as if the process of innovation was a widget-making assembly line.

So what is wrong about running such institutions as widget-making factories? Let me explain..

1. Widget factories are optimized towards making a known product. However innovative ideas, products and services by are, by their very nature, not well characterized and therefore cannot be optimized until they reach a certain stage of development.

Example- Would the internal combustion engine have been developed by an institute explicitly dedicated to making better steam engines? Would modern rocketry be possible if people had stuck to creating better cordite rockets? Do you know how often revolutionary technology fails before it is successfully optimized and implemented in a marketable product?

2. Widget factories reward productivity as measured by metrics based in the old way. So a scientist who produces two revolutionary papers is ignored while one that produces 20 mediocre papers is rewarded. Any guesses about what this leads to?

Example- Was Domgak a well-known authority in the field of anti-microbial drugs before he was involved in the discovery of anti-bacterial sulfonamides? was anybody at Intel involved in creating the first CPU a known expert in CPU design? What about that Steve Jobs guy? What were his qualifications and track record at running a company selling what was then a niche product?

3. The beancounters running the funding programs for these institutions lack an understanding of how innovation occurs and who innovates.

Throughout history, willingness to be a heretic is a far better predictor of innovativeness than any IQ test. Such people are “weird”, “loners” and not into political games. A system that allows such people to exist and do their stuff will however benefit from such heretics.

Beancounters disdain such people and instead support political, media savvy, networking sociopaths in ‘famous’ (big) institutes who promise the sky but cannot deliver shit. So how is the ‘War on Cancer’ going? Why were so few anti-microbial drugs discovered since the 1970s? Why don’t we have disease modifying drugs for Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease? What about stopping ageing? What about better rocket engines (non-chemical)? What about energy positive nuclear fission?

Can you really achieve anything if you repeatedly follow the same few roads that always lead nowhere? But who will support people who want to go off the failed paths?

4. Lack of long-term support and financial compensation for innovators.

Universities are guilty of using researchers as disposable widget assemblers. Do you really think that 2-4 year terms for a project and passing the project from the guy who was making progress to a newbie, however clever, will not screw up a project?

Will Ph.D students following up on their supervisors ideas ever innovate? Will post-Ph.D researchers who hop through insecure, temporary and poorly paid academic positions or unstable industrial positions ever bother innovating? Heck, most people with any self-respect will leave such a system or never enter it in the first place.

If a researcher is compensated less, and has less job security, than the person who cleans their office- only two things can happen..

a. Researcher cynically plays the ‘game’ and produces nothing useful.
b. Researcher leaves science for good.

No amount of new buildings, equipment, grants, programs, brochures, PR spin or any other assorted bullshit can compensate for such a fundamental flaw.

Income Profile of Japanese “Herbivore” Men

February 5, 2011 31 comments

I am sure that you have read many articles about how the 20-35 age group in Japan are becoming herbivores.

For much of this decade, the older men who drove this country to the top of the economic league tables have looked on in bewilderment at the foppish antics of the generation below. Japan’s twenty- and thirtysomething males seem disinterested in careers and apathetic about the rituals of dating, sex and marriage. They spend almost as much on cosmetics and clothes as women, live with their mums and sit down on the toilet when they pee. Some have even been known to wear bras. “What is happening to the nation’s manhood?” wonders social critic Takuro Morinaga.

Many pathetic dying white morons ascribe this change to soya, testosterone levels or other self-congratulatory bullshit. Some aging and dying white femfists welcome this as men “reconnecting with their feminine side” and other assorted nonsense.

The answer lies in the income and job prospects of that generation of men. While these men are the most educated generation in Japanese history, they have no real prospects of a permanent job or decent income.

According to a story in the japanese language magazine- Weekly Diamond more than 80 percent of 35-year-olds in Japan live on a yearly income of two million yen (US $20,000) – a key poverty benchmark. I have mentioned this in a previous post, but it deserves to be repeated.

An online English language article on the same trend- Income of young Japanese women tops that of men

Income for single women under 30 hit an average of 218,156 yen ($2,680) a month in 2009, edging above the 215,515 yen ($2,640) of their male counterparts for the first time ever, according to an Internal Affairs ministry survey. The change, which saw women’s incomes surge 11.4 percent from the previous survey five years ago compared to a 7 percent fall for men, was driven by the plunge of the global economy and the fact that men’s incomes simply had more room to fall. “Basically, men’s salaries were much higher in general, and they took a much bigger hit when the economy worsened,” said Hideo Kumano, chief economist at the Dai-ichi Life Research Institute.

Averages, but not median, numbers are distorted by the top 20% effect.

Ask yourself a simple question- If your temporary job paid less than 2,000 USD per month, you lived in Japan and had no real chance of career advancement- would you care about what society thinks about you?

The apparent disinterest in sex with “real” women is also easy to understand. Japan is a society with ubiquitous and inexpensive technology, high-speed internet access and a tolerance for a variety of sexual interests. In contrast, Japanese women are supremely greedy, status conscious and manipulative ball-breakers. It certainly does not help that they are into rationing sex within marriage at the best of times.

So what would YOU choose? Disengaging from such a dysfunctional social system or trying to play an obviously rigged game with no worthwhile rewards.

Only CONservative and LIEbertarian brainwashed white men are stupid enough to play games rigged against them.
