The Real Implications of the UN Security Council Resoultion on Libya

Some of you might have heard about a very recent UN security council resolution dubbed by many in the media as a “no fly zone” resolution. It seems that many ignorant media types, bloggers and commentators have not read the entire text of that resolution.

Authorizes Member States that have notified the Secretary-General, acting nationally or through regional organizations or arrangements, and acting in cooperation with the Secretary-General, to take all necessary measures, notwithstanding paragraph 9 of resolution 1970 (2011), to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, including Benghazi, while excluding a foreign occupation force of any form on any part of Libyan territory, and requests the Member States concerned to inform the Secretary-General immediately of the measures they take pursuant to the authorization conferred by this paragraph which shall be immediately reported to the Security Council.

Let me simplify that- Use airpower to kill Gaddafi’s troops and destroy his equipment/ resources.

Decides to establish a ban on all flights in the airspace of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya in order to help protect civilians exempting humanitarian flights and authorises member states and Arab League nations acting nationally or through regional organisations or arrangements, to take all necessary measures to enforce compliance with the ban on flights.

This is the part about no-fly zones.

Calls on member states to intercept boats and aircraft it believes may be taking arms and other items banned under the previously passed UN embargo and includes armed mercenary personnel in that category – telling members states to comply strictly with their obligations…to prevent the provision of armed mercenary personnel to the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya

Naval blockade.

Many European countries like Italy, France and UK are going to implement it very quickly, and you can be sure that USA will join, as will a few Arab states (Qatar, Emirates). It seems that Egypt is now arming the people in east Libya.

My prediction- The bulk of his supporters will desert him after western airstrikes kill some of them.

Make no mistake.. the west is doing this because the ‘rebels’ are probably a better counterparty for business deals. Any genocide, or prolonged civil war, in Libya would worsen speculation about the price of oil. Furthermore, no sane person now believes that Gaddafi can maintain control over Libya even if he wins back any more cities.

It is time to put him, and his family, out of their misery.

So now you are cheering the powers you claim to detest?

While their motivations are selfish, getting rid of Gaddafi is a step in the right direction.

Every now and then, these governments make the right and sane decision based on their previous errors.

But those dicks should have specified Qaddhafi’s territory instead of saying “Libyan Arab Jamahiriya”.

    Mmmk.
Ground forces are actually bindingly excluded?
I was a bit skeptic of this being the prelude for “the West” starting the 3rd and final ground war in a Muslim country, and finally piss off the whole lot of them.
So that the bible crazy US generals get to fulfill their coveted Armageddon script.

At the moment, Libya is the weak link in Southern Europe. Something like0.5 to 1 million African immigrants/refugees are camped there. What happen when law and order totally breaks down? Oh, that’s right, they try to sneak into Italy and France.

Oil production has largerly stopped, again, Southern Europe’s key supplier.

Plus, the West has hated Gaddafi for decades, but we haven’t had a legit reason to get rid of him.

Is it a coincidence that those Black immigrants used to penetrate Europe after coming mostly from Libya?
Matter of fact, the huge Black immigration to Europe was caused by Moammar, for obvious reasons.

A step in the right direction for what? The object is just greater control for the West.
