    I see it.

Why build cities and infrastructure when we have limited population and space?

Solution: Why not re-engineer, update, and rebuild existing cities centralized planning style?

A side note. Libertarians state that if you break a window, you should be forced to repay it. Libertarians consider slavery to be initiaton of force. So it could be a consistent position (for a Black libertarian, for instance) to be in favor of reparations, but to oppose welfare (for whites).

I have never owned any slaves.

It would also be consistent to demand reparations from African states.

My understanding is that they ARE updating and rebuilding existing cities, and that’s part of the problem. Block by block, they’re razing old and run-down (but still occupied and functional) residential areas and erecting luxury condos that few can afford. Certainly not the working poor that are displaced. Sooner or later, something’s got to give…

I don’t see how. Nobody currently living was a slave or a slave owner. At best you might be able to sue the descendants or estates of slave owners, but that seems improbable, trying to get damages awarded for what someone’s distant ancestor did to your distant ancestor. As a person of Eastern European descent, can I sue the Mongolian government for the pain and suffering inflicted by Genghis Khan?

I’m going to assume that the theoretical reparations would be paid by the government (read: taxpayers). How would that be accomplished equitably?

Which blacks would get the money? All blacks, period? That’s unjustified for blacks that came to America post-slavery. What about blacks with mixed lineage? Will they get only a partial payment, as only some of their ancestors suffered from slavery? Will those with a black parent and a white parent be denied reparations but issued a tax credit so that they neither profit nor are punished?

What about whites (and non-whites) who came to America post-slavery, and never inflicted slavery on anyone? Why should they be punished?

What about descendants of Underground Railroaders, Union soldiers (or the Northern / free states in general), who are responsible for slavery being defeated at all? Will they be exempted?

The same kind of reasons can be given against Holocaust reparations for Jews, or the reparations France demanded from Germany after WWI.
Also, I discussed whether it was a consistent position to take, not whether reparations are good in themselves.

That said, I think minimal consumption entitlements are the best form of welfare.
