Why Sociopathy Exists

Ever wondered why sociopaths exist? Many people have pondered over the reasons behind their existence, and some have even written books about them. However almost all of them make one implicit assumption.

Sociopaths are different from normal people.

Many stupid or disingenuous “scamademics” go to great lengths to try and demonstrate that sociopaths are somehow defective or have alternate brain circuitry. While that may be true in a small percentage of sociopaths, the vast majority of people with sociopathic tendencies are not that odd or different. Many who believe in the vodoo “science” of evolutionary psychology try to attribute the survival of sociopaths to some reproductive advantage, though it is unclear how such people or their progeny would have escaped retribution in lawless societies– if they were truly different.

There is another rational, but tasteless, explanation for the existence of sociopathy and sociopaths which involves a different explanation for the motivations behind human behavior. Most belief systems try to explain human behavior in one of two ways. Some prefer to see humans as ‘fallen angels’ who are not intrinsically evil. Others tend to see humans as ‘risen apes’ who carry a lot of baggage from their evolutionary past. But there is a third possibility..

Humans are delusional, self-aggrandizing scumbags with a massive ego and an extremely limited ability to back it up.

My experience with human beings suggests that this is, unfortunately, the best explanation for human behavior. Both the ‘fallen angel’ and ‘risen ape’ models require the vast majority of humans to have some ability for objective introspection. How often have you seen that?

On the contrary, you are far more likely to see people behaving in a manner that suggests the unwillingness to think objectively or reason. Don’t believe me? Here are some examples-

How many guys does an average woman “truly” fall in love with only to leave them for her next “true” love? While biology can explain this behavior in non-sentient species- is that really possible in humans? Would a sentient person be able to do this peculiar mental dance without at some level being aware of what is really being done?

How often have you seen employers mistreat their employees even if there is no objectively measurable gain from such behavior? Why would so many people, in so many cultures and different eras abuse power- even if were ultimately a losing proposition? Ever heard of the Stanford prison experiment? Why do even average people behave like sociopaths when given the ability to do so?

Why do whites who are routinely abused by other white spend so much time scrutinizing the criminality of non-whites? Who screws you out of more money- a white realtor or a black ‘criminal’? a white employer or a black ‘criminal’? a white spouse or a black ‘criminal’? Who is more likely to kill you- a white doctor or a black ‘criminal’? a white “justice” system or a black ‘criminal’?

Why would so-called clever people waste their best years working hard in careers that will never reward them during those very years? What is the use of having millions and billions of dollars if you are too busy, stressed, scared or old to enjoy it? However we have no shortage of people wanting to be doctors, lawyers or engineers? Are they really intelligent- or just clever morons?

I can give you many other examples- but you get my point. Human behavior is just too peculiar to be rationalized unless you accept that it has a rather strong base of sociopathy, delusion and narcissism.

There is therefore probably no clear delineation between “normal” human behavior and sociopathy.

Sociopaths are just ahead of the curve.

No, these models come from the observations of a few and then have been popularized over time. Your model does have merit though with self-sacrifice, altruism and empathy on one end of a human behaviour continuum, and sociopathy, evil and butchery on the other.

I once read that evil is simply unmitigated self-interest so the good man puts some things above his self-interest while the evil man puts nothing before his self-interest. Modern society is telling people to put nothing above their self-interest so society is growing more evil, (or sociopathic) with time.

Clearly society, or more accurately the people in it will cannibalize and destroy each other if this continues.

How much sociopathy society can tolerate before disintegration is the question that comes to mind.+

Because as Sprite commercials once stated, “Image Is Everything” and the black criminal is more intimidating, based on his image – an image further perpetuated.

My theory about how sociopaths came to existence is that it is an adaptation to living in a civilization. From all that I have seen of hunter-gatherer’s societies it seems that they simply have no sociopaths at all. A sociopath couldn’t survive in a society of hunter-gatherers. Their whole social system is based on reciprocity and anyone trying to enslave other members of the group would have been directly noticed. I personally believe that sociopathy came to existence from the notion of ownership which didn’t exist in human societies before we started domesticating animals and doing agriculture. The majority of human beings are neurotypical human beings. Every aspect of their biochemistry is inherited from their hunter-gatherers ancestors, since it was our lifestyle for at least two million years. At this time we were completely exposed to natural selection and the ones with the best physical, intellectual and SOCIAL skills (like empathy) would have higher chances of survival. When we started farming everything changed. The ones with higher chances of survival were the richest and most influent and in order to be the richest and most influent having no empathy is the best advantage. At the very beginning of farming and civilization some individuals started adapting to the new system that was created and since these people had higher chances of survival they had higher chances of passing on their genes and these key characteristics started to become neurologically programmed in sociopaths.

I have said something similar in one of my posts.

Since thousands of years we have been brought to believe that societies of hunter-gatherers are savage, violent and corrupted, and that myth has been used for as long as we believed it to justify genocides and enslavement and it is still used today. While in fact the human race has never been as violent since we started farming. Most of the people think that the human being need laws and need to be controled by an authority in order to bring peace. Nothing could be further from the truth. In only 10 000 years of living under the control of an all-mighty authority this world has known nothing more than genocides, diseases and enslavement. We lived for at least 2 million years without any governement, police or constitutions and we did very well without it. In fact, societies of hunter-gatherers have absolutely no problem of sociopathy. They rarely kill eachother, they all work for the survival of the group, they have much more respect for women and their health is MUCH MORE better than ours. The human race should have never started agriculture and domesticating animals, maybe a few thousands of people at their time would have died of hunger but if would have avoided the death of billions of people.

There is a very good paragraph I read elsewhere that further elaborates on that:
You spend more than half of your waking time at work. Money can only improve the time you don’t spend at work up to a limit. This won’t compensate for spending the time you spend working in a crappy environment, with people you don’t like, in bad working conditions, or having to obey heavily bureaucratic regulations – these being specific to any large company.
