Why Asians Overwhelmingly Voted For Obama in 2012

November 30, 2012 16 comments

It seems that many CONservative ‘intellectuals’ are surprised that Asians in the 2012 USA presidential election voted for Obama over Romney by a 3-1 margin. Many of these morons have therefore come up with a variety of theories about why Asians preferred a liberal candidate over a CONservative candidate. They seem to be having a hard time understanding why an economically successful and educated ethnic group chose those race-mixing, un-christian, un-american, socialist, big-tax, welfare statists over pull yourself by your bootstraps, christian, ‘real’ american, ‘small’ government, ‘low’ taxation, ‘personal’ responsibility touting ‘honest’ people. These include such original ideas as Asians are susceptible to group pressure, that they are slavish followers of alpha whites, that they come from a collective cultures or are not assimilating and so on.

But before I say anything more about why Asians overwhelmingly voted for Obama- let us be clear about one thing.

Barack Obama’s policies and views are to the RIGHT of Ronald Reagan, Bush 41 and Bob Dole. He is to ‘socialism’ what a frozen desert from a convenience store is to high-end gelato in Italy.

So here is my theory about why Asians preferred Obama over Romney. Let me start by taking you back to the republican presidential primaries of 2008 and 2012. Remember the colorful cast of candidates who were auditioning for the republican presidential ticket? Do you remember Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and of course Sarah Palin? Do you also remember that each of these contenders were once considered to be front-runners for the republican presidential ticket? Then there is the issue of various events in Bush 43’s two terms (invasion of Iraq, aftermath of Katrina, economic crash of 2008) and how he ‘handled’ them. Now, even a person with basic critical thinking skills might wonder why one of the two main parties in the american system has not been able to field a presidential candidate who is not a moron, zealot or corporate douchebag for the last 16 years.

Could it be that Asians of all colors were not impressed by the kind of people who ran for the Republican presidential ticket?

Then there is the issue of stated positions and policy. While the aging white base of the republican party, and its core nutcase constituencies, are not exactly known for their level of education or critical thinking abilities- the same cannot be said about asians (east or south). Telling people that cutting taxes on the rich will solve all problems might appeal to dumb whites who believe in the Horatio Alger fairy-tales, but might not those who can see that such policies have consistently done the opposite for thirty years. Similarly shredding the social safety net might get you the support of racist and fat old whites driving around a WalMart store in electric scooters, but not those who have first-hand experience of living in ‘small government’ societies.

While core republican economic policy positions might stoke up stupid fat old whites, other groups might see them for what they really are- slavish corporate cocksuckers. Even though the democratic positions on economic issues are pro-corporate, they look somewhat saner compared to republicans.

Let us now move on to the issues of social CONservatism and public displays of religiosity. Empty talk about banning abortion, war on the christian faith and similar bullshit can help you get the votes of cornfed morons from the more rural parts of USA. However that same talk has the opposite effect on people who live in urban and more secular parts of the USA. While Asians (of all colors) are somewhat socially CONservative, they keep those beliefs to themselves rather than imposing them on others. You will seldom hear Asians ranting about the ‘rights of the fetus’ while simultaneously condemning those who have kids to a life of deprivation and poverty. Furthermore educated Asians are a rather nonreligious and pragmatic bunch- even when it comes to being ‘true’ to their own religious faiths.

An excessive focus on religion, especially one that is foreign to their own heritage, is not the best way to makes Asians vote for you.

Race is also a factor. Asians rightly see the democratic party as a more multi-ethnic party that the republicans. Now some of you might counter with examples of people like Bobby Jindal, Nikki Haley and a few other minorities in the republican party. But let us be clear about one thing- these token minorities in the republican party had to become self-denying christian nutcases to reach their positions. Jindal was involved in performing exorcisms in his late teens and supports creationism over evolution while Nikki Hailey tries her best to constantly remind her constituents that she is a ‘true’ christian. While Asians may not have come to the USA under the same conditions as African slaves, they have experienced enough racial discrimination and slights to make them avoid situations where they are required to play ‘uncle jinda’ and ‘aunt hailey’ to be even accepted as second-class humans.

Asians rightly see the republican party (and supporter base) as being full of old stupid reactionary whites who believe in their intrinsic racial and cultural superiority.

So there you have it.. Asians overwhelmingly voted for Obama in 2012 (and 2008) because he was the less repulsive candidate of the less short-sighted, simple-minded and racist party. Was that really so hard to understand?

A Brief Observation on the Mental Inadequacies of “People”

November 25, 2012 33 comments

I was originally going to title this post- “On the mental inadequacies and deficiencies of whites, iranians and other assorted morons”. However that title would have been a bit too long and hard to read. Anyway, this post is my brief analysis of the contents of three threads on They are:

1. Indian trolls in the wild

2. A private email from our favorite Indian

3. The Indian Race Troll revelaed

Before we go any further, let us be clear about a few things.

Firstly- I do not dispute that the person who is the subject of those three threads is a troll. As some of you may know, people have been trolling the internet before Netscape 1.0 was released. I would go so far as to say that the presence of trolls is a good proxy for popularity of a website or bulletin board.

Secondly- while I prefer to pay for quality pussy, I do not have strong feelings about people who like spend their time trying to get it for “free”. If you believe that an average woman is more honest than a whore, I am quite happy to let you live in that delusion.

This post is not about ‘game’, travel sex, the “quality” of women of different ethnicities or the “deeper meaning” of life. It is about what the various posts in those three threads reveal about the mental inadequacies and deficiencies of whites, iranians, arabs and other assorted things. But before I start dissecting those threads- here a simple question.

Why are people interested in learning to pick up chicks for sex spending so much time talking about what Indian men are or are not?

I mean.. how does that discussing about that particular topic improve their odds of getting laid for “free”? Face it- commentators who frequent, and post on, that forum don’t exactly have a harem of chicks fighting over rights to have sex with them. In any case, it appears that the reason behind these threads is an old post by Roosh about the racial totem pole for dating in north america. While you may, or may not, agree with its premise- I see it as good an explanation as any about the racial dynamics of dating in north america. But that is not what resulted in three fairly long threads about some guy who was ‘trolling’ that forum. While I am not going to critique each and every message in those threads, I will give you a quick overview of what these “people” are saying in the first thread.

Gmac says on 05-06-2012 at 07:42 PM

Based on my own experience, indian (and east asian) guys are some of the most insecure, introverted men on the planet when they are out of their element (or country) – these are usually the guys who understand that stereotypes exist and can’t get over that fact. I’m not really surprised. Ah well, what can you do?

Sounds like an personal observation.. and that is fine by me.

Neil Skywalker says on 05-07-2012 at 04:24 AM

Most Indian guys i have met abroad were anti-social,very very cheap, nerdy, needy, creepy and very unhygienic. The ones in hostels were hated by most people there. I remember one in Sao Paulo who disgusted the whole hostel with his eating habits and how he left the toilets behind.

Hmm.. isn’t that odd. Surely a person of the commentator’s high sociability, big expense account and immaculate hygiene should have no problem getting chicks. So why is he on that forum? To be clear, I am not implying that all comments are unreasonable..

P Dog on 05-07-2012 at 08:54 AM

The thing is: brown guys put the pussy on the pedestal to the max. In that regard they blow any other group out of the water and this is especially more so for white girls. Meanwhile brown girls are just like Jewish and Persian girls in that they’re more status seeking and materialistic except they’re not as attractive (that’s not me being biased against other brown people, everybody here agrees that brown girls on the whole aren’t hot) which makes the attitudes they sport hard to put up with.

But for some reason, that thread (Indian troll in the wild) continues for 18 pages.. I cannot but help wonder why something as trivial as some guy trolling a forum would cause that sort of discussion. Anyway.. at some point in time Roosh started two more threads ( A private email from our favorite Indian and The Indian Race Troll revelaed) about the same guy. One of those threads supposedly has his ‘real’ photo.. though I suspect it is really more trollbait.

So how far has the troll succeeded in what he set out to show- namely, that north american society is seriously racist towards Indian guys?

After going through a few pages of comments in each thread, it is hard to deny that the attitudes and mindset demonstrated by Roosh and his followers in all three threads totally vindicate what the troll intended to show. The very fact that there are enough racist comments to fill over 29 pages (at last count) of the bulletin board shows that the troll had a valid point.

Now you can say whatever you want about his looks, actions or behaviors- but it is hard to deny that all of those would have been far smaller issues if he was white. You can also say that “life is unfair”, but then don’t complain when some Indian guy screws you over in business or at work.

Nazis as Corporate Drones

November 22, 2012 24 comments

I often spend a lot of time reading about various versions of the same historical events to gain a better perspective of what actually happened. While doing so is neither easy nor conclusive for events that occurred hundreds or thousands of years ago, it is somewhat easy for events within the last 100-150 odd years. The prevalence and volume of record keeping by more than one party to an event let us reconstruct the near past with a pretty high degree of accuracy- and this brings me to the topic of this post.

My analysis of various streams of available evidence suggest that most Nazis (defined as paid employees of the Third Reich) did what they did because they were good corporate drones.

I am certainly not the first to suggest that most of the Nazi leadership were just following orders- however horrible they may have been. Hannah Arendt made that observation in her 1963 work- Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil. Indeed, extensive interviews and first-hand accounts of many people in senior positions in the Nazi hierarchy, such as Rudolf Hoss, suggests that most of them were not unsually anti-semitic. Curiously enough, most of these followers were also quite aware of the nature and impact of their actions.

Which brings us a peculiar question: How can a person who is not intrinsically ‘evil’ end up participating in and excelling at something in which they are not particularly interested?

While it is easy to understand the actions of the raving anti-semitic minority among Nazis, it is not easy to understand the full range of motivations for people like Eichmann or Hoss. And, it is even harder to understand the motivations of your average Nazi- who, face it, usually joined the party to improving his career prospects. Nor is the phenomena of average people becoming murderous thugs for improving their career prospects limited to Nazis. Scores of Russians who carried out Stalin’s orders (whether they involved murder, torture, forced labor or starvation) were no better than their German counterparts. The Japanese soldiers and administrators who enslaved, abused, tortured and killed millions of Chinese in the 1930-1945 period were also cut from the same metaphorical cloth.

So what does any of this have to do with modern corporations and the ubiquitous ‘corporate drones’ that seem to inhabit and thrive within them?

A part of the answer lies in understanding the nature of modern corporations and their similarity to other social institutions and arrangements. I am, once again, not the first to note that modern corporations have more than a passing resemblance to feudal societies, plantations and other ‘top down’ totalitarian systems of governance and social organisation. If anything, corporations seem to combine the worst elements of all three- from the intrigues of feudal society, exploitation of plantation-type forced labor and ‘top down’ we-known-better-than-you paternalism of conventional totalitarianism.

It does not take a genius to figure out that moderately ambitious personalities with little ability for independent thought, but just enough brain-power to carry the task they have been assigned, will flourish in such institutions.

The personality, behavior and aptitude of your average higher management types are therefore interchangeable with concentration camp or gulag commanders. The middle management types in modern corporations are the functional equivalents of the lower level of management in the death factories run by Nazis, Soviets and Japanese during WW2. You average corporate drone would be perfectly at home as a valued and trusted employee at a Nazi, Soviet or Japanese death factory.

You know something else.. after being caught doing all those horrible things (which they knew were horrible) they would initially express surprise at the ‘true nature’ of their job. They would go on to blame corporate culture, bad leadership and the need for obtaining timely promotions for justifying their actions. However they would show considerable pride in the quality of their work, even if that work was murdering a few million people who they barely knew. They would then try to tell you that they were good family men (or women) just trying to earn a good pay and timely promotions. All of this would be said with great sincerity and earnestness- largely because they actually believe in everything they told you.

The unpleasant truth is that a majority of people are incapable of abstract or interdependent thought, regardless of the results of their so-called ‘IQ’ tests. I would go so far as to say that those who score well on ‘IQ’ tests are better at fooling themselves. Most people have no concept of objective reality and will enthusiastically follow any conman (or conwoman) who feeds them enough table scraps to buy their loyalty. These drones will create complex mythology, narratives, rituals to justify the most bizarre behavior and decisions made by their superiors or leaders.

The biggest differences between modern corporations and genocidal totalitarian movements are that the later had more fashionable uniforms and better sounding job titles..

More Updates on the Petraeus-Broadwell-Kelley-Allen Scandal

November 13, 2012 25 comments

Since my previous post on this topic, we have all learnt a lot more about this rapidly expanding scandal. So let me first give you a quick update of new revelations since my previous post-

1] It seems that the other woman in the scandal, Jill Kelley, has lawyered up and hired PR for damage control. While we can only speculate about the reasons behind her actions, some of her past actions and those of her twin sister might be behind those decisions. Let me explain..

Jill Kelley (nee Khawam) was previously a well-known ‘socialite’ in Tampa. In addition to also being married to a doctor, her kids are in the similar age range as those of Paula Broadwell. Then there is the issue of her non-identical twin sister, Natalie, who has a rather interesting life of her own. It seems that she has a rather troubled martital and work life and lost custody of her child to her ex-husband because even the family courts thought she was “unstable”. Oddly enough, both Petraeus and Allen (the other tainted general) submitted letters to the judge testifying that Natalie was a qualified mother. I wonder why..

It is also hard to overlook that both Jill and Natalie have had serious financial problems linked to their lifestyle. Natalie filed for bankruptcy in April 2012, claiming $3.6 million in debt against $349,000 in assets. Her debt included an $800,000 “personal loan” from her sister and brother-in-law. Her sister, Jill, has an equally interesting financial history and is also close to declaring bankruptcy, though you would know that from the way she lives or dresses.

So it seems both sisters are manipulative bitches who used their looks and charm to game the system. I should also mention that their financial situation make them suitable for blackmail by foreign governments or entities- which is especially disconcerting given their access to the highest ranks of the armed forces and politicians in the USA. But wait.. there is more.

2] Now that you have seen how parasitic, and potentially dangerous, the Khawan sisters are- let us consider the depth of their contacts to the elite circles in USA. Jill was an early social climber and had a plan even when she was in high school. She or her twin sister once dated Charlie Crist, the former governor of Florida- though dating a gay guy does not really count as dating. Moving on..

Over the years, Jill has been a very active socialite and has spent considerable success in rubbing shoulders with elites. It is very likely that her volunteer ‘social liaison’ job was meant to get her access to powerful and rich people. Did I mention that some of her relatives are go-betweens for deal making in the Middle-East? The Khawam sisters know how to play the game better than american-born socialites. They have even pulled off the cancer charity scam– successfully, I might add.

Now you might wonder how women with such interesting financial and personal histories can get so close to people who head the CIA and run the war in Afghanistan? What does it say about american, and indeed human society, that such people can climb the social ladder while decent human beings suffer and starve? What does it say about the supposed intellect and street smarts of our so-called ‘elites’? Do they have any of those much vaunted abilities or qualities at all? Can men who are manipulated with ease by such women run wars or institutions rationally? Can you still say that the ‘elites’ are competent with a straight face?

3] So how far did Jill and Natalie manipulate the so-called ‘elites’? Enough to have Petraeus and Allen write official letters vouching for Natalie during her failed custody battle with her now ex-husband (who was a Bush loyalist).

Then there is the story of John Allen, the guy in command of the american war effort in Afghanistan, who wrote hundreds if not thousands of flirtatious messages (email+gChat) to Jill and Natalie Kelley– women he never actually had sex with to the best of our knowledge. Reflect for a minute on the oddness of a four-star general leading a difficult counter-insurgency smitten with a woman 20-years his junior and with 3 small kids of her own. Then consider the reasons, distasteful as they may be, that Jill kept on playing this game with him. What does that say about the quality of leadership in the american armed forces?

Also reflect on how these women were friends and trusted confidants of senior politicians in Florida. What does it say about the judgement of the male “elites” who chased them- especially if the Khawam sisters were offering the lure of sex without giving the real thing? What does it say about the judgement of the female “elites” who hung out with both sisters? I leave that for you to think about for now- though I might revisit that issue in a future post.

and here is another interesting fact about Paula Broadwell- the woman who started it all. It turns out that the book which was an important part of her Ph.D disertation was ghost-written by Vernon Loeb. That in a nutshell what your so called ‘high-IQ’ meritocratic elites really are..

Update: John Allen, the four star general, running the war in Afghanistan was engaged in much more than “flirtatious” behavior, and more similar to phone sex. So there you have it.. the guy running the war in Afghanistan was wanking off to sexual email and chat between him and the Khawam sisters.

Two Million Hits: Nov 12, 2012

November 12, 2012 13 comments

So it seems that this blog has cleared 2 million hits after all!

While it took almost 1 year and 9 months to get my first million hits, the second million took barely over a year. I should also add that this was achieved without spamming forums for depression, anxiety or MMORPG games. Plus I have my reasons to not make it too well-known, for reasons that might be obvious to some readers.

As I said in my first million hit post- this blog is about something more than money or fame. While I certainly would not mind a bit of either, they are a distant secondary to my real motivations which are somewhat different from your typical blogger or even most human beings.

This blog is about ideas and ways of thinking that seek to achieve something far bigger than most people can imagine.

I am not interested in patching up or reforming systems that simply don’t deserve to exist- nor do I care about the rights of people who deny those very same to others. I also have no illusions that my ideas are popular or socially acceptable. If they were, I would have started a new religion to fleece the gullible.

The basic belief behind my ideology is that human societies become malfunctional when some people can screw over others and then insulate themselves from the consequences of their actions. That is true regardless of the era, ethnicity, race or knowledge of prior history. However the hierarchical model of human organisation in the 5-6 thousand year old ponzi scheme called “civilization” is such that widespread abuses and dysfunction are inevitable. You cannot reform “civilization” as we know it anymore than you can convert shit into chocolate.

But what do I have against “civilization”? Does it not give me all sorts of technological toys in addition to clean drinking water etc? While many may point out similar supposed benefits of civilization, they forget that the majority of the supposed benefits from “civilization” are barely a century old.

For most of its existence on earth, “civilization” has not endowed any benefits to the vast majority of people or improved their lifestyles.

If anything, “civilization” has fucked over countless billions of human beings since it inception- even those on its ‘winning’ side. It has retarded technological progress and obstructed efforts to improve living standards. It has encouraged a zero-sum mentality not unlike that seen in besieged cities where everybody is plotting to betray and kill everyone else for a bigger piece of decaying horse meat.

Can you seriously say that such behavior, and traditions that justify it, are the crowning glory of organisation for intelligent life in the universe?

I therefore see my myself as pro-reason, pro-technology, pro-basic human decency but anti-civilization. It is possible to get rid of the undesirable aspects and social structures of humans without a significant negative effect on the parts (mostly recent) that are good. Now doing so won’t be easy or non-messy, as the lives of many people are still centered around screwing others. An even larger number of people simply cannot imagine a different way of doing things.

While it is easy to start another mass-movement that replaces one group of assholes with a slightly better group of assholes, doing so does not change the overall paradigm. The way to achieve any real change lies in creating so many isolated, yet connected, “defects” that the structure cannot withstand the resultant instability. Any person who plays by the rigged rules is the ideal ‘non-defective’ building block of any ponzi schemes. However any person who stops playing by the rigged rules or sees through them, is the ‘defective’ building block, who will ultimately contribute to the downfall of the ponzi scheme.

Loosely connecting such individuals such that they know about the existence of like-minded people without explicitly coordinating between them is the best way to destabilize the ponzi scheme.

I simply seek to create the awareness in enough people that the system which is screwing them cannot be reformed. While people will accept ‘temporary’ hardship if they believe in the possibility of a better future, they will not do so if they understand that their plan to reform the system has no chance of success. Once that stage is reached, every attempt by the system to tell them otherwise will start having the opposite effect.

So ya.. I am basically telling people that what they believe in is a bunch of big fat lies and what they cherish is using them to further its own agenda.

However rather than just telling people that they are gullible rubes, I prefer to show them how exactly the system is scamming, abusing and impoverishing them. I also try to show them how the very people they trust, quote and look up to are undeserving conmen. It is about creating cynics who can see things for what they really are..

While I am aware that my rate of success in changing the viewpoint of my readers is not high, it is cumulative. Between that and the low rate of fertility (fewer new suckers), social atomization and the ubiquitous of information access and sharing, it is likely that my efforts will contribute to the increase of ‘defects’ in the system.

A Quick Roundup of the Petraeus Affair

November 10, 2012 16 comments

As almost all of you know by now, David H. Petraeus, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency and one of America’s most decorated four-star generals, resigned on Friday after an F.B.I. investigation uncovered evidence that he had been involved in an extramarital affair. Now there are many conspiracy theories on how this was orchestrated by someone in the Obama administration because he was gong to testify next week about events that led to the death of the US ambassador to Libya in Benghazi.

Now. being a cynic, I tend to look at things rather differently for most people. The following is my take on the events and what we know about it- so far. You may not agree with them.. but that is fine by me.

Let me start the story by talking a bit about the Petraeus guy. So he was born on November 7, 1952 (what a way to turn 60..). After finishing Westpoint he married a plain-looking but smart and connected woman- Holly (Knowlton) Petraeus. So far so good.. Though he seemed to a very competent, he stuck in positions far from the action for decades. Infact it is fair to say that though he had been around combat zones for years, his now famous mission in Iraq was the first time he was intimately involved with the real thing. That is also where he became famous for doing something that did not make the situation worse.. a feat that had eluded his predecessors for reasons we can only speculate about. Anyhow, his ability to not screw up things further made him a media darling.

Hot Chick

So it seems that the woman in question, Paula Broadwell, herself a bit of an overachiever married to a plain medical doctor, first crossed paths with Petraeus in 2006. Coincidentally she was born on November 9, 1972 making her 40 years old at about the time the scandal started to break. She is married to a doctor, Scott Broadwell, who by his looks and profession appears to be incapable of inspiring his wife in ways the 4-star general (Petraeus) could. He might also have known about his wife’s affair since an advice column letter published in the a few months ago looks a lot his handiwork. Infact, I considered the possibility that the mystery “government executive whose job is seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership” was Petraeus, when I came across that article on in July.

So how did this whole thing unravel? Based in what we know so far, the sequence of events is as follows-

The original FBI investigation which led to public exposure of the affair started when they investigated e-mail threats to another woman close to Petraeus, or as we call it- jealousy.

The recipient of the e-mails was so frightened that she went to the FBI for protection and help tracking down the sender, according to the officials. The FBI investigation traced the threats to Paula Broadwell, a former military officer and a Petraeus biographer, and uncovered explicit e-mails between Broadwell and Petraeus, the officials said.

Did I mention that Petraeus prefers gmail? Yes, even the CIA director uses gmail for personal correspondence.

When Petraeus’s name surfaced, FBI investigators were concerned that the CIA director’s personal e-mail account had been hacked and that national security had been threatened.

Moving on, the FBI interwed all concerned parties and it became rather obvious that Petraeus was “All In” Paula Broadwell. Yes.. her biography of him is named “All In: The Education of General David Petraeus“. I am sure that many people other than myself can think of jokes around that title and the events since that book was published. Did I mention that Petraeus was also on her committee of Ph.D advisers? and people thought that Petraeus was boring and square.

In my opinion this is one of those unfortunate cases where a pretty high achieving woman who was bored with her unimpressive, though somewhat well-to-do hubby, found some real-life alpha dick on the side. Can you really blame her or him? He found a very attractive younger woman who showered him with attention and sex, which was probably a nice break from the 37 year marriage with his dumpy, if intelligent, wife. But them she got jealous and acted like a crazy bitch and one thing led to another, culminating in a FBI investigation that lead to the public exposure of this affair. Since he was a very visible public official in the hypocritic USA, he had to resign. Other than that this story is unremarkable and just goes on to show how fame, power and status can remove panties of attractive married women- even those who have young kids and an OK marriage with a reasonably affluent guy.

Whether it is a small time drug dealer, sports-star, mass murderer or the director of the CIA- women chase exciting alpha cock even if their marriages or long-term relationships are very comfortable. Moreover, they don’t care about the consequences of doing so or its impact on other people- including their own kids.

The Basis of Legitimacy in Modern Democracies

November 6, 2012 5 comments

As many of you know, the quadrennial election for the presidency of the USA is on the 6th of November this year. The cynics may rightly point out that the results of this election are largely symbolic, given that both the republican as well as the democratic candidates are beholden to corporations and the super-rich. It is also hard to dispute that both are empty suits who make good props for staged photo-ops while they are not acting on the behalf of the interests who funded their electoral campaigns. But this post is not about whether Obama and Romney are the handmaidens of plutocrats. It is about something else which the conduct of these elections could alter forever. Let me explain..

A disputed election resulting in a Romney-Ryan “win” would fatally undermine any belief in the legitimacy of the electoral process and the “system”.

Now some of you might say that the USA has a long and glorious history of electoral fraud and voter suppression- and that is true. Accounts of outright fraud, ballot stuffing, voter intimidation and suppression have been documented since the dawn of elections (including presidential elections) in the USA. However there are reasons why we cannot use the past as a guide to our future. Here is why-

1. The role, involvement and public expectations from elected officials have changed a lot over the years, especially the last 60-70 years. Electoral scandals from the beginning of the republic to the early 1900s had little effect on the real world as the government was mainly concerned with doing things like fighting a few foreign wars, invading brown/yellow countries and finishing the genocide of native americans. Elections mainly decided who got to steal public money and distribute it to their friends.

Contrast that situation to today when the results of elections determine things like healthcare premiums, laws on taxation, unemployment benefits, educational choices, upkeep of infrastructure, social security checks and a host of other things that have a direct and very significant impact on the average person. Many more people stand to gain or lose based on the results of elections than was the case 200, 150 or even 50 years ago.

2. The proliferation of media, especially the non-controlled type, has a huge impact on how people perceive the world around them. For most of the history of the USA as a republic, the speed and bandwidth of communication was very low and tightly controlled. You had to be someone ‘big’ to control the publication of book and newspapers or radio and TV broadcasts. The vast majority of americans had a very narrow choice of sources of information and channels for public discourse right into the 1980s. The web revolution of the late 1990s has upended that though the older generations are still overtly influenced by traditional media.

It was easy to suppress, minimize or spin away scandals in an era where average people had access to two newspapers, three magazines, four radio stations and three TV channels. It is no longer feasible to suppress damaging information or remove it from the circulation and efforts to do that have the opposite effect on that story. Moreover storing such information and sharing it is far easier than in the past as is the speed of its dispersal. Today it is very easy to find documents and audio or video clips that can permanently damage the image of any politician.

3. The demographic profile of the USA has changed such that the older generation is far whiter than the younger generations who increasingly make up the demographic in and under the working age-group. It does not take a genius to figure out that the attitudes, needs (real or imagined) and perceptions of these self-defined groups are at odds with each other. Old and rapidly decaying whites want to maintain a system that keeps them in “power” but still receive all the goodies from the work of people who don’t look like them. Given that we don’t in the age of slavery anymore, that might be impossible to achieve.

Non-whites in the USA have never seen whites as honest and altruistic human beings- to put it mildly. While they may have kept their opinions to themselves in the past, the leverage that whites used to have is now either gone or on its last arthritic legs. However as the republican parties attempts to suppress non-white voting show, they still believe that they can get away with it and live happily ever after. Then again, it is hard to treat self-delusion.

We also cannot forget the effects of Bush-Vs-Gore in the 2000 election.

Many conservatives think that they can get away with bullshit and scams because of the results of that election. However things have changed during those 12 years. Firstly, the USA is no longer an optimistic country with a booming economy and relatively widespread prosperity as was the case in 1999-2000. At that time, people thought that an uncharismatic guy who seemed very distant (Gore) was not much better of a choice than a Texass blowhard who looked personable (Bush). People did not want to rock the otherwise comfortable boat of the system because they thought the choice was between two otherwise unremarkable people.

While that did appear to be initially true, we saw a rather different side of Bush and his puppet masters after September 2001. Between the bizarro invasion of Iraq, the fueling of the real-estate bubble, enhanced outsourcing of jobs to China, the aftermath of Katrina, the inability to find ‘that’ guy in Afghanistan. Consequently far fewer people now believe that both parties or candidates are “equally bad”. It did not help that the Democratic challenger in the 2004 election, John Kerry, was a disaster and his VP ticket was an obvious conman. In an odd way, Mitt Romney is the republican version of John Kerry.

It is also important to realize that the spread of the internet and social media since 2000 makes any significant suggestion of electoral fraud hard to remove from the public consciousness of people- especially the younger and increasingly less whiter generation. To put it another way, a potential Romney-Ryan presidency is illegitimate even before the votes have been tallied. Now there are countries that have ‘pretend’ elections- like Egypt under Hosni Mubarak until a year ago or Mexico until the mid-1990s. But the results of these elections were widely understood to be scams and the population sees such leaders and the system as illegitimate. We all know how things work, or don’t work, in those countries. We also know how unstable/insecure those places are.

The real question is- Do you want to live in a system where the leaders and the system have no popular legitimacy and it is every man/ woman for himself/herself trying to scam and screw over everyone else?

An Alternate Definition of Life and Self

November 3, 2012 6 comments

Many of my older posts have explored the concept of reciprocity (or the lack thereof) as it applies to the function of human societies. In my opinion the function/dysfunction index of any society is directly linked to the type of relationship between that society and individuals in it. While I am not suggesting that a functional society has to treat every individual equally, it is rather obvious that there are levels of social benefit below which no rational individual can be expected to keep acting in good faith.

But who, or what, is the ‘individual’? In an older post, I had talked a bit about my views on the nature of self. Let us continue that discussion. In the graphic comic/movie “Watchmen” one of the protagonists says-

A live body and a dead body contain the same number of particles. Structurally, there’s no discernible difference. Life and death are unquantifiable abstracts. Why should I be concerned.

In the comic/movie this is supposed to convey the profound detachment towards the rest of humanity felt by the trans-human character of Dr. Manhattan . But let us take this idea a bit further and ask ourselves what this statement implies about the nature of self. Here is a thought experiment-

Imagine you had a machine that could identify, enumerate and pinpoint the location of every atom of a given human body at any given instant. Now take a person dying of some disease or complications of old age and put him/her in this machine. If you kept taking all-atom snapshots of the person till a few minutes after death, would you see any drastic change in the number, position or arrangement of atoms in the molecules that make up that person’s body? More importantly- could you use a database made of the atomic snapshots of a number of dying people to ascertain whether a given person was dead or not?

Given the wording of my thought experiment you have probably realized that there is no dramatic shift in the number of atoms or change in their arrangements between life and death. Indeed the very existence of the bacterial and fungal spores or the cryptobiotic forms of tardigrades and rotifers suggests that the line between being alive or not is far more nebulous than most people realize.

Having said that, there are fairly straightforward ways to determine if something or somebody is alive or not.

While the existence of atoms which make us up is clearly a necessary condition to being alive, it is not sufficient. So what makes being alive possible? I propose that it is the exchange of energy (information) between these particles that defines being alive. An aggregation of water, ions, lipids , proteins etc could have the potential for life but it is not alive until the components of this system interact with each other in a manner that transfers energy (information) through the system without destroying it.

Life then is conditional to both the existence of its chemical constituents as well as a self-sustaining transfer of energy (information) amongst them.

The mind, and self, require the existence of a functional (live) brain and therefore are just an extension of the same underlying process. Therefore both can be defined as patterns of energy (information) transfer amongst the atoms and molecules which make up the brain and its supporting organ systems. While there are likely to be general trends and common patterns of such energy (information) transfer between individuals, it is unlikely that two people will share the same exact pattern.

Some of you might ask- Why are you conflating energy and information? Are they not different from each other?

Let explain my view on that with another thought experiment. Imagine a volume of space at absolute zero and devoid of anything a few thousand molecules of hydrogen. How could you ascertain their existence? The easiest, and probably only, way to do that involves getting some form of energy to interact with those molecules such that they absorb and or emit energy in a manner that signals their existence. We can take this idea one step further and ask how molecules in a living organism can recognize and interact with other molecules to make life possible. It is rather unlikely that each molecule in our body has a little demigod controlling it in an intelligent manner and therefore we have to consider a more plausible explanation. While energy transfer between two constituent molecules in an isolated cell might look somewhat mechanistic and probability driven in isolation, a series of such couplings could form a self-sustaining chain of energy transfer that could run that particular cell and by extension all other cells in a given body.

The self is then an ephemeral yet highly complex summation of such inter-molecular energy transfer cycles- not unlike the sum of all binary data being processed inside a computer at any given moment.
