Would You Use A Doomsday Device?

I often ask hypothetical, and semi-hypothetical, questions to make people see familiar situations from a new viewpoint. The question posed in this post is meant to help you see the true nature of an individuals connection to the rest of humanity. So here is goes..

Would you use a Doomsday Device (DD) if you had exclusive access to one?

Let us first consider the most important issue surrounding the use of such a device, namely that it will kill every human being on earth including the one who used it. There will be no human survivors left to enjoy any excess of material goods after the event nor will it be possible to rebuild human civilization in any shape of form. It will mark the end of humans as a species and nobody will care, remember or commemorate your achievement.

So, would you still use it? or would you use the threat of the device to achieve personal fame, power, wealth or some ‘higher’ goal such as changing human nature for the better?

While I don’t claim to know, with a high degree of certainty, what you guys would do- I have a strong suspicion that most would try to use the threat of such a device as leverage to achieve personal goals. In short, I doubt it will be deliberately used as most humans are too interested in continuing their pathetic existence on earth.

I, however, would use it without hesitation and here is why..

1] My views on humanity have changed over the years. There was a time when I would have entertained the hope that humans beings might voluntarily change for the better. It has however become increasingly clear to me that human beings are incapable of voluntarily changing even when doing so is highly beneficial to them. Most people seem to prefer plodding around in shit-filled pits rather than try to get out of them. They don’t even want to acknowledge the mere possibility of anything existing beyond their shit-filled pits.

While you can change group behaviors through fear, such changes will be temporary. They will likely disappear once the threat is gone or people find a way or ideology to continue living in their shit-filled pits. Furthermore, since humans beings are mortal even exclusive possession and access to the DD for the rest of your life would at best improve things for 3-6 decades after which things might start to fall back to previous state of affairs. Then there are more mundane problems such as maintaining exclusive control and access to the DD or monitoring the progress and effects of your reforms.

2] You could always use your exclusive access to the DD to obtain personal fame, power, wealth and get everything else that accompanies them. However that is a very mediocre use of such a capability. Warlords, kings, emperors and dictators throughout human history have obtained all of the above through some combination of dumb luck, extreme sociopathy or accident of birth. Even people like Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan can get almost all of that through little more than behaving like unstable and depraved attention-whores. Threatening to use a DD to attain public fame, make tons of money and fuck lots of hot groupies is a lot like hunting mice using a guided missile- certainly feasible but a massive overkill.

Moreover, maintaining exclusive control and access to the DD will (once again) occupy a considerable percentage of your time and mental efforts. Your situation under these circumstances would be rather similar to that of Gollum in LOTR, where his overwhelming desire to keep physical possession of the ‘one ring’ twists him into someone who cannot enjoy the true power of the ring. In my opinion, using a DD to get fame, power, wealth and sex is more trouble than it is worth.

Another possibility involves destroying the DD to prevent anyone else from using it. However anything that can be created once can also be created again. There is also nothing to stop the next person who gains control of such a device from either using or threatening the rest of humanity with it.

So far I have tried to show you why not using the DD or destroying it is less than optimal. So let us consider the ‘unthinkable’ option- using it.The principal objection to using the DD is that it would kill all humans including the person who activated it. But is death avoidable or optional in the first place? Even agelessness does not confer true immortality.

The real questions surrounding death therefore are ‘when’ and ‘how’. Linked to these two questions is another issue- namely the quality of life.

The answers to these questions depend upon on the amount of suffering and pain involved in living or dying. For example most people would prefer to die in their sleep or through some other relatively quick and painless means. Almost nobody wants to slowly die from painful terminal cancer or some other disease that leaves them invalid or bedridden. Similarly few people in good health and in a stable socio-economic situation are interested in dying. It is really about taking the path of least pain and suffering as far as the individual is concerned.

But does the survival of human beings as a species after your death matter?

The answer to that question lies in the nature of the relationship between the individual and society he or she lives in. Scenarios where the relationship between the individual and society are symbiotic and mutually beneficial do not typically cause a dying individual to wish for the death of the society he or she lives in. However the same is not true in scenarios where society is either uncaring, abusive or exploitative towards the individual. Individuals in such societies have either no interest in what happens to everyone else after their death or they actively wish for their destruction.

As I have said in many of my previous posts- it is painfully obvious to a large and rapidly increasing minority of people that we live in a society that is uncaring, abusive and downright exploitative. Now factor in the very high levels of social atomization, frequent betrayals in close relationships and fewer people having any kids. It does not take a genius to figure out that a significant minority of people today have little to no interest (or hope) in the continuation of humans as a species.

I therefore believe that the chances of a DD being used are much higher than most people are willing to themselves believe. Another factor that makes this scenario more probable is that throughout human history people lacked the technological means or opportunity to kill everyone else along with them. Today, that is no longer the case and such an outcome is within the realms of both technology and possibility. It is therefore really a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’.

What do you think? Comments?

Intro: I ‘m a german (Deutscher) and my english is not as good, as it should! Beg your pardon!

Comment: A doomsday device is quite useless! All or nothing is not a good option! Power results from the ability to give or to take away. Besides you cannot prove your power. Nobody will believe you. And when you use your divice – nobody is there anymore!

The nuclear bombs have finished the war between owners! Nuklear weapons create a defensive power. In Afghanistan nuklear weapons are without any benefit. The USA are a nuklear power, and nevertheless the american soldiers die in a war against primitive warriors.

You would have absolute power, if, like in mind controll stories, you can abolish the thinking and feeling and perhabs the body of people, transforming corporate ladies into total bimbos with breasts like melons and a aver dripping pussy. That’s it.

A doomsday device is total crap!

I am talking about a hypothetical device which could be activated by a single person.

Be shure, I got it! But to have such an device under controll is without any benefit!

The world is bad, so am I! What’s the problem? Evolution is the way to handle an unperfect world. This is the way of god. Justice, equality, sanity, to be free from pain, free from hunger and thirst, freedom itself, all these things mankind longs for, all are illusions, not essential for life. To finish life is the attitude of a little child, which knocks down the chessboard, when chess becomes difficult.

The post-noah-world is not better, than the pre-noah-world, to use a biblical image.

Life is life! It’s only a game!

    I’d use it without question.
Simply because, as Judge Death says, “Only the living commit crimes. Therefore, life is a crime”.
People do not learn how to treat others civilly … unless there are penalties for not doing so.
And on the other hand you have plenty who do things that are legal, but unethical.
And I do not exclude myself from the people getting Doomsday’d.
But I’d certainly be happy to have company 🙂

For avery human being, the world only exists as an image in its head! Nobody can proof, that what we realize is real. (See Matrix, the film).
When I die, this is the end of the world, my world. Even God is dying with me. If there are no eyes to look, there ist noch realisation, there is no reality! If there is no believer, there is no god!
Reality is a asumption of beings, able to realize!

You need no doomsday device to render extinct manhood. Just close the eyes and shut the ears, and all are gone.

You can’t keep your eyes and ears closed forever.
On the other hand, that may be why the deaf and blind (comparatively) seem to take the ups and downs of life with more equanimity – they simply don’t know how bad it can be.

Ok, this isn´t reasoning anymore just plain bitching.

Of course one wouldn´t use such a DD, especially as a psycho-/sociopath sadist.
Death would simply be a too easy way out for all the “riff-raff”.

Makes much more sense to take “the exit” yourself and leave the others to continue abusing each other to your “otherwordly” amusement, doesn´t it?

People are going to abuse each other whether or not you are around to witness it.
The funny logic about stopping crime before it starts, means you have to stop people before they become criminals.

    This is my favorite topic.

There is a recent growing social movement, (started by YouTube philosopher/vlogger DoNotGod/inmendham/GloomBoomDoom/efilist/Gary Mosher,) called “EFILism” (“LIFE” spelled backwards).

Its stated goal is to extinguish all sentient life on earth. EFILists call the Doomsday Device the “Big Red Button”. This is currently a very hot topic among the atheist vlogger community on YouTube, Searching EFILism or EFIList on youtube currently gives over 700 videos.

Why not submit comments that are not spam?

    • January 18, 2013 at 1:54 pm

Huh? Spam is defined as “unsolicited bulk commercial” messages. My message was neither unsolicited (“What do you think? Comments?”), nor bulk (I do not leave millions of comments on different blogs), nor commercial (I am not selling anything). So if do you not want me to use any hyperlinks in my posts, then just say that instead.

        Thank you very much, Unka!

I’ll try to avoid hyperlinks in the future.

you would not use a doomsday device, because then you would not be able to read the comments of your inane but insightful followers, err readers….

nor would you be able to fuck escorts…

your heroes holmes and brevik could’ve easily killed themselves but it looks like they craved attention far more than a haste escape….

even guys like soldini seemed to want people to know about his suffering-he left a blog up even though he offed himself….

there are a few people who might end all human life–they would not be narcissist’s such as yourself…they would be in immense pain–even with all your whining, you probably live a semi luxurious lifestyle-you’ve mentioned good food and good drinks…they would be oppressed and not in the feminist “my life is easier than those chumps who had to sign up for selective service but no one calls me out when I whine because I don’t have a dick” kind of way….

this theory has been discussed far more articulately….

“better dead than red” but of course you know all about that as you’ve referenced Dr. Strangelove….

you’ve gone past the point of shocking and into comedy territory….

the truth of the matter is you crave attention and pussy…

Have you ever considered a scenario where a person who do not have a realistic chance for either might take other out with them. The exact collateral damage is really a matter of technology and probability.

I don’t mind hypothetical questions. This hypothetical question is impossible in the world we live now. If there were such a device, one in 1 million would try it. What we have devices that wipe out populations in some geographic area.

Of course I wouldn’t. I am not sociopath have no wish to die and lack the requisite anger.

Also I accept human nature for what it is, people are banding primates driven by a mix of instinct , emotion and reason in differing qualities.

Assuming that they can only be driven to do the “right thing” by whatever standard I suggest is both stupid and presumptuous. They are as they are.

Now had I device more akin to Star Treks Tantalus Field that let me zap whoever I liked w/o being detected, that might tempt me. If I could mass zap, I don’t think I could avoid going full on monster. It would just be politics writ large though, no hate just imposing my will and as anyone knows, power is truth.

Gary Mosher meets nearly all the diagnostic criteria for NPD. Across the board.

Internally, they are more fragile than a butterfly’s wings in an increasingly tightening vice. Every effort of theirs, no matter how economical or grotesquely artificial, is frenetic energy clawing for ‘love’, approval, etc. Even your shock is a type of nectar to their unrelenting sweet tooth. Do not be fooled: what passes as his ‘ultimate compassion for Life’s unfairness’, is no compassion at all. He worships the idea of his own death, not yours. If he says otherwise, that is merely an expression of his anger for your lack of approval or agreement.

His NPD has him nearly hard-wired for complete philosophical blindness. His rage is far more real than his ‘reason’ or attempts to seem reasonable. Like his hammers, a mask of rationale is a tool to bide Time with you. Challenge his use of that tool and you will see his rage reappear quickly.

Ultimately, the Narcissist is in an acute and perpetual state of Lack. As old as he is there are not enough years left to begin to reconstruct the environment to re-parent him and bring his damaged, abhorrent personality back to some modicum of emotionally stable and viable. He may suspect this himself on some level, which would, of course, act as more fuel for his unnatural agendas, demands, and expectations of himself and society.

BTW, people with NPD almost never, repeat: Never, are capable of getting proper medical care for their disorder and it’s due to the general nature of NPD. It’s a very rare occasion for any psychiatrist to see a client with NPD walk in of their own accord to address it. Usually IF they are seen, it’s a result of an incarceration mandate of some sort and even then the client’s primary goal is to play what they see as an imposed game and their hope is to ‘defeat’ the doctor or wriggle out of therapy by becoming ‘model’ patients. But to get under their hood for real? To get even a glimpse into the machinations of the fragile architecture that is their person? Good luck!

The general, very general, theory of what makes up a large part of NPD is a personal pain so severe that feeling it, admitting that it might even exist, terrifies them. There is a house of horrors there where screaming and oblivion and want gnash as the soundtrack. And so maladaptive methods born of that frenzy to run from it have the patient with NPD dancing on the head of a pin in all directions to appear confidant, knowing, courageous, charming, intelligent, and so on. All masks in turn because in fooling you, they can fool themselves and then feel some fleeting, temporary relief that everything is alright with them and their lopsided world.

Interact with and engage them at your own risk but do not adopt their bravado and hubris whatever you do. The average person is out of their depth to do so safely and even those trained to detect the symptoms of NPD have to be careful because they know they can be fooled. See, the person with NPD never can be, understand what I mean? You knowing that they CAN suck you in, easily; that they are wired towards slight of hand and manipulation and are often at least ‘bright-average’ on the intelligence scale, if not close to genius possibly, (it ainlt a ‘good’ genius…’genuis’ is ‘ability to be skilled’, not actually skilled); you knowing you can be decieved by them is your greatest protection from *being* manipulated.

Mr.Mosher is ‘above’ or has no need for the pedantic, inferior path of the disciplined Philosophy student. I imagine he has many ‘reasonable rationalizations’ for not going to University to even learn *how* to study Philosophy, never mind it’s various very specific areas of study. It’s just as well really. He’d likely only have become aggravated and perpetually aggravating, though he’d spin it to himself that it’s merely the stupidity and failure of everyone else for not being able to recognize his very many superior intellectual gifts.

Think of this NPD as a yawning black hole, a soul sucker if you will, who lives to feed off of your reactions, whatever they may be, and you’ll be reasonably safe. You may also be sane enough to know that even trying to engage him out of pity alone will cost you. His mask of sanity may not place him in the same regard as you may have for a multiple personality or otherwise obviously mentally ill person, but he’s got serious mental health issues none the less imo. You wouldn’t bully or pick on or purposefully pick on a suffering, mentally ill patient right? Well, when you engage with someone like Inmendham it’s almost the same thing even if it doesn’t *seem* like it.

    • P Ray
      May 16, 2016 at 10:00 am

Their bravado and hubris are what cause other people, especially other rich sociopaths, to invest in them and amplify their powers.
Of course, while downplaying people who do the real work.

  16. May 15, 2016 at 4:50 pm

I’d personally be weary of anyone possessing the ability to destroy the world at the push of a button…besides the usual sociopaths in government, the only ones to currently own and historically use WMDs.

While some may conclude that life (theirs or anybody else’s) isn’t worth living, I wouldn’t want anyone to make that decision for me or for any of the people I truly care about.

While I sometimes feel sad when I hear of suicidal people ending their lives, it irks me when they do it in a way that hurts or inconveniences other people. You can’t see past your own pain; I can relate to that. You want to off yourself, then do it but don’t be an inconsiderate asshole: don’t jump in front of the subway train and traumatize the driver and the other commuters who have to witness your demise or the maintenance people who have to clean up your mess; don’t murder your kids; don’t jump off a building and land on some pedestrian; etc.

I know these people are hurting, but so is everybody else and their hurt can usually be traced to some inconsiderate asshole (parent or family member, teacher or other authority figure) doing what was done to them. Life ain’t fair? It’s because people like them make it that way.

    • P Ray
      May 16, 2016 at 10:03 am

The purpose of the “inconsiderate assholes” is to prove to other people that they exist, in a final show of defiance.
Usually people who commit suicide, up until the point of suicide, were in some way treated flippantly or not seen as worth a decent amount of concern.
      Hence, the showy death …

Very interesting hypothetical question, Advocatus. I don’t know what I would do.

It never ceases to amaze me however how oblivious people are to the suffering of others. I guess it is a self-defense mechanism or something.

The fact that some commenters are calling you a psychopath proves how little they have understood the general point.
