Interesting YouTube Channel: Wdtvlive42 – Archive Footage

I recently came across an interesting YouTube channel containing lots of interesting footage from old archived documentaries. The clips on this channel generally cover the era from the early 1940s to the early 1970s- though some date from as early as 1907 while others are from 1981.

Here are two interesting examples about two very diverse subjects. The first one is about nuclear thermal rockets– a concept that was successfully developed and extensively tested on the ground in the 1950s and 1960s. Sadly, it was never used to propel an actual spacecraft- manned or unmanned. The second one is classic cold-war hysteria about how communists want infiltrate USA and subvert capitalism, something that is oddly topical again.

A twist on a popular ol’ saying that I’ve used for the last twenty years of my 60+ years of life is, “Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat the mistake of believing the world is getting worse”.

Poring over archives demonstrates that, while the names and the technologies have changed, the same ol’ same ol’ human problems, tensions, conflicts, challenges, issues, and dilemmas remain, because, none of them have any ultimate, permanent solutions, nor even temporary solutions in some cases.

A favorite source of mine is pre-1960 “Readers Digest” magazines. As a then-popular periodical, it reflects much of the white-middle-class experience in the US during that era. Comparing articles then to those of the past ten years, you’d almost suspect the editors merely pulled articles from the 1930s and 1940s, updated them a bit, then printed them with post-2000 dates. Healthcare, terrorism, political corruption, lawsuits, sex scandals, veterans’ issues, financial insecurity, poverty, racism, immigration…you name it, it was an issue then too.

The world has always been as “bad” it is. Just, each current world generation, in the middle of experiencing its own very real pain, hardships, and struggle to survive, doesn’t because cannot know that earlier generations experienced and felt the same way.
