Why Trump’s Faux Populism Appealed to People Such as Cesar Sayoc

The last few days have seen the terminally declining cable “news” networks get their panties into a twist over some idiot from Florida mailing them, and prominent establishment democrats, what appear to be non-functional physical facsimiles of pipe bombs. Most journalists have tried to focus on the.. well.. odd life history of the alleged perpetrator, Cesar Sayoc. Some of you might have heard media pundits put forth theories ranging from Sayoc being moderately mentally retarded to merely suffering from mental illness. Very few seem to be interested in why a character like Sayoc got involved in what can be best described as the ‘Cult of Trump’. So what pushed a 56-year old man to mail pipe bombs to famous people?

Some will point out that he had previously threatened to bomb some building, in 2002. So what stopped him from going through with that threat and why did he not try something similar for the next 15 years? More interestingly.. how did a half-white man in his mid-50s with a sketchy life story end up becoming such an enthusiastic supporter of a faux populist such as Trump? The more cynical among you might attribute this to him living in Florida, and there is some validity to that idea. However, attempts to explain his behavior through some combination of mental status, state of residence or life history miss a much larger issue. Why was the Trump’s 2016 campaign able to attract people with some rather peculiar views on how USA should be governed?

To understand what I am hinting at, here is an older article by me about how the Simpsons Show is a good marker for ongoing demise of middle-class in USA. To refresh your memory, the family depicted in that cartoon series had what was widely seen as a barely middle-class lifestyle when it first started airing in early-1990s. Today that same lifestyle, unchanged from what it was since the shows’s beginning, is seen as distinctly upper-middle class. Think about it.. is it still possible for a family to support three kids (let alone own a modest house) in 2018 if the only bread-winner is a man without college education and a blue collar-ish job? And don’t forget that it was popularly considered feasible as late as the mid-1990s?

So what happened between.. 1990 and 2016? And what does any of this have to with the rise of Trump, the ‘alt-right’ and the behavior of Cesar Sayoc since 2015. The very short version is that systemic implementation of neoliberal economic policies by corporate-funded politicians of both political parties have eviscerated the middle-class in USA. A combination of deindustrialization, outsourcing, runaway financialization and passage of laws and regulations favoring corporations, oligopolies and monopolies over everybody else has reduced what once used to the largest middle-class in developed world to a mere shadow of its former self. Moreover, the vast majority of people have still not recovered from the 2008 global financial crisis.

The downstream effects of this artificial financial death-spiral (for the majority) has created an incredible amount of anger, hatred and distrust towards the Establishment. This is why voters in republican primaries of 2016 overwhelmingly went for a faux populist such as Trump. It is also why so many black voters in certain mid-western states decided to not vote for HRC in 2016 presidential election. Long story short, the under-performance of HRC in the midwest (and hence the electoral college) can be traced back to deliberately inept handling of the global financial crisis by Obama in addition to his unstinting support for “free trade” and other neoliberal nostrums. HRC having an incredibly fake public persona did not help either.

But what does any of this have to with the radicalization of Cesar Sayoc? Well.. here is an article by Trevor Aaronson at The Intercept which explains that in some detail. The quick summary is as follows: Sayoc was one of those guys who had big dreams but constantly struggled throughout his life. It did not help that he born at the tail end of ‘baby boomer’ generation and was therefore too late to benefit from most of the economic advantages of being born in that cohort. It seems that he evidently hit rock bottom sometime between 2009-2012 when the bank foreclosed on his home, he was left with no financial assets and had to move in (once again) with his mother.

As I have mentioned in older posts, the biggest hurdle to democratic party winning elections across USA is that they offer no concrete solutions to the problems faced by most voters. It is not secret that establishment democrats are against universal healthcare, taxpayer-financed higher education, higher minimum wages, tight regulation of financial institutions and other popular progressive ideas which have been successfully implemented for decades in other developed countries. To put it another way, they had zero interest in acknowledging and addressing (let alone solving) the problems faced by people such as Sayoc. It was therefore not surprising that a faux populist, like Trump, could animate many of the people left behind by the establishment wing of both political parties. And this how you get this..

So what finally drove Sayoc to mail all those pipe bombs to famous democrats and their rich supporters? We may never know for sure, but there are some clues. Over the last two years, Sayoc increasingly lived out of his van and had many precarious low-paying jobs. The simple fact is that someone with his life history had no real hope for a better future in this increasingly dystopic country aka USA. Maybe this is why he was so willing to believe that establishment politicians and establishment media figures were his personal enemies- and to be fair, that is a quite accurate characterization of the behavior of establishment types towards somebody like him. Who knows.. maybe he saw life in prison as more secure than the one he was living.

What do you think? Comments?

    In other good news,
Bolsonaro got elected! Looks like there will be fewer sour-faced feminists in Brazil, unless they want to be “disappeared”.

Well … if people want to live in a cutthroat system, they can enjoy having their own throats cut when they fall short …

It is likely that he might not his full term, for reasons that are all too obvious.

Ah, but until then, the (shit)show can be enjoyed.

As for Sayoc, the reason why he wasn’t picked up earlier is probably because he didn’t submit himself to the spy network of therapists, psychiatrists and psychologists.

Those people are big party-poopers especially when it comes to the idea that someone thinks society didn’t give them a chance.

That is why students are encouraged to talk it out with those “licensed professionals”, so that they can be “dealt with” before they “cause problems for others(who are probably shitting on them)”.

Looks like I was right. People who are unhappy … should just vent at the source of their unhappiness, if you ask for help, you’ll get the SS (Sedation and Socialisation) Corps …
these are the social scientists and welfare workers who like to say things like “society is working fine, you are the problem”(uh, if it was working fine, why the need to convince people?) and “you can be whatever you want to be”(why are blind people not allowed to drive?). The other purpose of this SS Corps is to make sure people don’t cause trouble or if they do, occupy them so that until the day they die, they don’t think of an organised uprising or protest.

Bowers and Sayoc may have been on to something …

        As someone else elaborates:

Never, ever call the suicide hotline. I’m not encouraging suicide, I’m trying to discourage you from doing something that will push you closer to it. If whoever you call determines that you pose an immediate threat to yourself or others, you can and will get your ass hauled in to the nearest hospital at gunpoint. They will strip you of everything – your possessions, your clothing, your pride – and throw you for countless hours on end into an empty room. You will have no privacy, anything the staff needs from you they will TAKE from you regardless of given consent or lack thereof, you will eventually be seen by a medical professional who makes it perfectly clear that they have better things to do than be with you, and then you’ll finally be cleared to leave if you’re at any stage of depression less than slamming your head into the wall as a suicide attempt. You’ll be out a lot of money, a lot of time, you’ll have a black mark on your medical history. And you know what you will have gotten out of the ordeal? Absolutely nothing.
You are better off doing anything short of actually braining yourself than calling the suicide hotline. The results will crush any remaining self worth you have. Meditate, pray, drink copiously, anything you can think of whether or not it’s actually productive is a better decision than admitting to suicidal ideation. Once you admit to that, you’re a liability to be dealt with rather than a person to be helped.

Another proper anecdote, from Dr. Steve Robson in Australia:
I was a young doctor, about to kill myself, when I heard a knock at my door
        By Steve Robson
        2 November 2018 — 11:30am
I won’t pretend I had an epiphany or that I suddenly was better. I did seek help. Rather than put my career, for what it was worth, further in jeopardy by talking to one of my hospital colleagues, I made an appointment with a GP in town. To this day, I remember the GP’s advice: Under no circumstances tell anybody or see a psychiatrist. (I only knew of one in Rockhampton, and was about to become his intern.) If I had a record of suicidality or mental illness, I would never be able to buy income-protection or life insurance, and I would probably never get a good job.

Looks like the “caring West” is like a place crawling with Khmer Rough chhlops.

For even further proof that police won’t take care of their own and an extra verification of what Robson said:
The late Dean McGrath said formal debriefing sessions or counselling were rarely offered. Usually members would head to the nearest pub.

Mr. McGrath’s growing reliance on alcohol had come to the attention of colleagues, who would place empty beer bottles and bottle tops in his locker. On another occasion, a .45 calibre bullet was also placed on the locker’s top shelf.

He failed an internal psychiatric examination, which was immediately spread among his colleagues and triggered further bullying and taunts.

He was called “Magoo” by workmates, who would shout: “Magoo, it’s medication time.”

Lel at the Mr. Magoo taunt.

W00t, Bolsonaro is killing it (gender studies at university)
Education Is in the Crosshairs in Bolsonaro’s Brazil
The president-elect seeks to ban from the classroom political opinions, debates, and any issues that could be construed as leftist.

The concept, developed by Brazil’s far right, has been at the root of Campagnolo’s activism and has been bolstered by congressional hearings in Brasília. Powerful Catholic and evangelical leaders such as Rio de Janeiro televangelist Silas Malafaia have enthusiastically backed the project for its focus on “family values” and its goal of eliminating discussions of gender diversity and sex education in the classroom.

Oh, okay. It’s not called “having 71 genders”, it’s called “gender diversity”.

      • P Ray
        December 6, 2018 at 4:14 pm

And to add some simple questions …
has anyone found a “gender studies” exam paper on the Internet? Just so we can know in detail what “gender studies” is about.

      • P Ray
        December 6, 2018 at 4:21 pm

Lel, woman accuses Bolsonaro of being a rapist, invades his personal space (despite getting warned not to), then gets pushed by his fingers … then acts as if he fingered her “What is this! What is this!”.

And they’re wondering how and “evil and barbaric person” got elected. Well, you’d be right in saying men get tired of quarrelsome women. But especially those that call them a “rapist” out of thin air.

Never mind, answered my own question.
gender studies past year exam papers
        returns a lot of hits.

Now the next question to ask is …
are we sure the papers are marked properly? How do we know that those who passed actually understand versus were just given the marks because they are women? So far I have not found any of these papers with answer guides, which would give an idea of how long the correct answers would be in general terms of lines and words

I think you are missing the picture here. People like Cesar Sayoc know full well that a New York real estate billionaire like Trump is not going to help them. Ceasar Sayoc hated blacks, Jews and gays and Trump’s rhetoric was carefully designed to appeal to racist like Ceasar Sayoc.

Cesar Sayoc is not Robert Bowers.

    • Dru McD
      October 28, 2018 at 7:12 pm

I disagree. In my opinion Fox News propaganda has fortified people like this with the false belief that Trump and his cronies are the only thing preventing the sky from falling.

    • MikeCA
      October 28, 2018 at 8:41 pm

According to CNN and some other sources, the manager of New River Pizza where Cesar Sayoc worked as a delivery driver, said that Cesar Sayoc called himself a white supremacist. The manager said that Sayoc dislikes gay people, African-Americans, Jews, and anybody who isn’t white. They don’t belong in the world, she recalled him saying to her frequently.

Which is odd, since he was half-white.

He also hated Democrats, but I doubt it has anything to do with de-industrialization. A guy like Cesar Sayoc has no idea what that is. Republicans more strong supported globalization than Democrats did.

That is correct and is also the reason why Trump easily beat 16 other establishment republicans to get the nomination.

Robert Bowers primarily hated Jews. He believed Trump’s lie that a caravan containing members of ISIS and other criminals was marching through Mexico and was supported by Democrats and Jews like George Soros.

Yes, that is quite obvious. But te real question is- why? What makes a guy in his late-40s wake up one day and shoot up a synagogue? What made him do it on that day but not the previous day, week or year? What changed?

    • MikeCA
      October 28, 2018 at 9:19 pm

I should add that Robert Bowers disliked Trump because there were many Jews in high level positions in the Trump administration. None the less, Bowers believed Trump’s lies about the caravan.

Correction.. people like Bowers want to believe that. They are not tricked or lied into what they believe.

I don’t think Trump is anti-Semitic. Trump’s son in law, Jared Kushner, is Jewish. Ivanka has converted to Judaism. Trump is a strong supporter of Israel.

Steve Bannon is anti-Semitic and got dog whistless to anti-Semities into Trumps messaging. Trump is also very familiar with alt-right language and memes and seems comfortable using anti-Semetic dog whistless.

Cesar Sayoc was either too stupid to realize there were Jews in high level positions in the Trump administration or considered that something he could forgive.

Sayoc wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. But why did he become politically active in 2015? Why not in 2007 or 2011? What changed?

“Sayoc wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. But why did he become politically active in 2015? Why not in 2007 or 2011? What changed?”

What changed in 2015 was there was a candidate for president proclaiming his racism loud and clear. Previous Republican candidates had dog whistled racism. Trump used a megaphone to shout it.

Possibly.. but then why did he not join the “Tea Party” movement. As you might remember, that Koch-funded movement was largely driven by racism towards Obama after he was elected in 2008.

“Possibly.. but then why did he not join the “Tea Party” movement. As you might remember, that Koch-funded movement was largely driven by racism towards Obama after he was elected in 2008.”

The Tea Party was largely racist, but it was wink, wink, nudge, nudge kind of racism. It was not the in your face, megaphone screaming racism that is Trump’s hall mark. There is nothing subtle about Trump’s message.

Look at trumps closing ad for the midterms, accusing democrats of letting a convicted cop killer stay in the US. The actual facts are this person entered illegally in 1993 when Clinton was president. He was arrested and deported in 1997 while Clinton was still president. He apparently returned to the US quickly and was arrested in 1998, then released by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. It is unclear why he was released.

In 2001 he was arrested on marijuana charges and deported. This was early in the Bush presidency. By 2002 while Bush was president, he re-entered and married, apparently to a US citizen. It was the Bush administration that allowed him to stay in the US after his marriage.

Probably no one is surprised that the basic premise of this ad that Democrats allowed this cop killer to stay in the US is false.

I read your links, but I am still convinced it is Trump’s in your face racism that got people like Cesar Sayoc excited. His house was foreclosed on in 2009. If that motivated him, why didn’t he get active in 2010, 2012 or 2014. It was Trump calling Mexican’s rapists and criminals that got him excited about politics.

Well, he obviously did not do it to off democratic leaders, since the bombs were stage props. He didn’t do it to help Trump, because he managed to help bolster the democrats’ narrative about Trump as the ultimate cause of “this kind” of hatred. Timing, stupidity, and many other details bolster the idea that we shouldn’t be digging into Cesar’s antecedants, but into how this staged bullshit was orchestrated into a national narrative.

They should also talk about the evils of “women wanting to be in unofficial harems for Chad Thundercock”.

The other fun thing that women like to hide is whether they’re married.

They know they can close more sales or be considered for more jobs if they seem “available for a sexual relationship”. One reason why many married women, even on LinkedIn, like to only show their face or leave out the word “Mrs.” A lot of secret, unspoken strategies are used by women, but when men have their own strategies, it is “creepy”.

  7. FakePresident
    October 30, 2018 at 10:59 am

The following (non-political, just for entertainment and a few possible observations only) uses a Fake Name President that may or may not be like Squidbillies Dan Halen to consider some more possibilities.
The Fake Name President Hump was seen as a Authority Figure by people such as that guy, and Hump’s authoritative presence/authoritative talking/and authoritative Tweets built up enough Certainty (confidence in taking an action, feeling justified to do something, desire greater than any fears, etc) that he finally acted out those continuous thoughts/input/Tweets that were repeated frequently by his leader Hump dropping verbalBombs that the guy believed sending packageBombs was the right thing for him to do.
Hump is seen in the mental map of his followers as a Cult level Authority Figure whose public image has been built up over decades who wears a Suit and who is perceived as financially successful and powerful who projects a strong powerful authoritative command that his followers cannot resist obeying Hump. Using Social Media to Tweet, Hump is viewed as the Supreme Authority Figure to them that Triggers his followers to follow him. Liberal (at least originally) is more about Freedom, and Conservative is more about Control (Controlling others). There may not yet be a Democrat with as much perceived Authoritative Presence than Hump currently has. So, Republican Conservatives (who want Control especially of the Courts so they can impose their repressive especially sexually repressive ideology to sadistically get off on Controlling other people) attract the masses of people who also want some Control. Hump being Authoritative to an extreme point of being quasi-Authoritarian his followers are okay with because they don’t see it as limiting their self-repressive lives. The Christian Right also wants Control (Dominion Theology to control the Seven Mountains of Government, Schools,…) to make the U.S.A. into a Theocracy under their extremist version of Christianity don’t align with Liberals/Democrats (who at least originally, not the current Left, going further back was more about Freedom) as the Christian Right aligns with the repressive/Limiting/Controlling World View of Conservatives/Republicans (who are more about Control). Many of the PUA/Manosphere type also got very confused/delusional and started to align with the Catholic Bannon types/Christian Right/Right Wing/Conservatives/Republicans a few years ago before 2016. The Hump MAGA movement solidified this World View of Control into a Cult level brand that people such as that guy can identify with and shape their own identity around with a sense of purpose/mission to MAGA.
Like attracts Like, so Hump acting semi-crazy like some Cult leaders is congruent with the mindset of other crazy people who want to feel a larger sense of Control (if only briefly) so it attracts people predisposed to doing crazy things. The guy didn’t do it for financial gain and Hump’s economic policies did not benefit his followers such as this guy. People who feel insecure/inferior/out of control, don’t want to take responsibility, they want to blame others so they can feel secure/superior/and in Control (even if only for a few days). It wasn’t about his Self-Preservation (Survival). Some of it could have been for Recognition (ego/attention/being a MAGA foot soldier could have made him feel significant/important if only temporarily). In MAGA is a “Romance”/nostalgia appeal that Conservatives/Republicans are attracted to that they want to go back to. Conservatives/Republicans like to attack others to feel Control, so Hump attacking others attracts/activates people who also want to attack others to feel Control. Hump using Twitter to send VerbalTweetBombs was like Permission from Hump. The guy could have felt Approval and Validation. He got his Authoritative Figure/Father Figure daddy Hump’s Attention like look Dad Hump I did this for you so now you know me and love me and Approve of what I did for you. Hump probably secretly liked it and approved of it. The guy also probably wanted to feel Respect, Strong/Strength (verbally attacked others, steroids), Admiration, Uniqueness/Stand Out, Approval from other MAGAers, Appreciation to be Appreciated, Acceptance by Hump and his peers in the MAGA group, Power (to feel Powerful and for others to see him as being Powerful), to feel Superior (to feel better than others even though economically he was inferior to most others in his MAGA group), and briefly to feel Control.
So people such as that guy are attracted to and Triggered by a Cult type figure such as Hump because they perceive Hump as a Dominant Leader with Power and Authority who becomes their Authority Figure. Hump is a Powerful Authority Figure they can Identify with.
When Hump verbally attacks others his followers view those verbal attacks as acts of Power and Strength, they crave Revenge, they like the attacking of Scapegoats that don’t fit in with their own Identity, and their Authority Figure Hump Leads them in throwing verbal rocks at what they view as their Common Enemies, and Hump’s AttackingTweets thus Triggers in their minds that they are on the same team/tribe/group. They feel Power/Control/Protected/Safe/Secure behind their Authority Figure Hump.
The guy did not have a good job making more money (he wasn’t upset that Hump didn’t help him with that).
The MAGA slogan was a Dream to aspire to, Hump explains away their Failures and validates their Suspicions (the System is rigged against you so that’s what’s been holding you back/promoting only the conspiracy theories that back up Hump), Revenge (attack “others”), Fears (IslamicTerrorists,Immigrants,Wall), Verbal Attacks/complain about/throw the rocks of AttackTweets at their so-called Common Enemies. Thus MAGAers will follow and do things for their Authority Figure Hump.
That guy Analyzed the (even if not accurate/disinformation/bad) Data (My Authority Figure Hump is TwitterAttacking these people), the consistent repetition of Hump’s AttackingTweets frequently spiked dopamine making him further addicted and reinforced his neural network that those are their Common Enemies (even if incorrect) that they are to attack, the Emotions of Anger and Revenge built up to where he finally snapped/was Triggered to act on it in some way in the physical world, and thus as an outlet/output he took Action by sending things that corresponded with the AttackingTweets of his political Authority Figure Hump.
Positive Sum Game: (Hump and his Alliance of the Christian Right/Republicans/Conservatives) for the Reason (Elect Hump/Appoint Conservative Judges), then a Zero Sum Game with a Boss Game: (Hump and Christian Right/Republicans/Conservatives against their Competition the Democrats in a Political/Media/Verbal and Social Media Twitter/Cultural that they already lost and will not win/Judicial) war, for the Endgame (Boss Hump/Religious Right extremists Christians/Republicans/Conservatives in CONTROL).
This is the first Twitter War. The Christian Right/extreme Right Wing Republicans/Conservatives have been behind the scenes plotting for this since around 1979, and now with the confluence of Twitter and their puppet Hump they started Twitter War I.

I am floored that people do not think as the crisis bailouts as essentially taking it in the arse. Politicians and the media loudly proclaimed who they were working for and so few listened.

Ethnic cohesion is actually pretty useful for the little people, as it immunises them to any divide et impera tactic from their elites. They will sooner attack the distant leader than their neighbour. Multiculturalism (with multiple races for extra effect) destroys this, and some groups (including some in the elite) know this. If you want the people to beg for a dictatorship, mess up the “social tissue” as the French say. (Brazil, anyone? That’s what multi-culti democracies devolve into.)

Unsupervised mixing of blood is an old and effective way of destroying the unity/strength of a group, from a family to a nation. This seemed obvious wisdom up until about a century ago everywhere, but since then the West decided it was complete bigotry, unworthy of even checking for truth. I wonder what happened?

People could of course get over their differences and realise they are de facto in the same boat, but have you seen that ever happen? Liberals seem to do that, but it’s either hypocrisy, or self-hate disguised at out-group love.
