Dissent and skepticism are the basis of progress in all fields of human knowledge. However from time to time, societies lapse into outright worship of one viewpoint. Such single-minded worship always causes great misery for the majority and encourages unscrupulous people to act on their worst desires.
Progress is not possible, unless the status quo is disturbed. Usually such shifts require two factors, namely: a crumbling status quo and skeptics who will verbalize the obvious.
My job is to point out that the emperor has no clothes, and is indeed naked.
